Of this there is credited to the British Isles 984,908, to Ireland +30,700, Scotland 87,504, Wales 0,031, Germany 718,182, Sweden 115,922, Austria 03,000, Norway 95,353, Switzer land 55,100, France 72,201, Hungary 9,- 900, the Netherlands 10,541, Denmark 31,- 771, Spain 5,206, Portugal 4,627, Italy 55,- 100, Belgium 7,221, Russia iu Europe,3B,- 837, Poland 12,970, from Asia 123,838, from America494,o24 —a grand total(with several nationalities not specified) of 2,- 812,191 for the period named. MARINE TONNAGE,FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC. The total foreign tonnage for 1880 is set down at 15,239,534; of which Great Britain leads with 7,948,320; Germany with 1,089,740 and Norway and Sweden with 1,235,000. New York has 50 per cent of the entire tonnage, Boston and Philadelphia about equally divided, fol lowing with about 10 per cent each. The total tonnage of the merchant marine of the United States for the same year was 4,068,035, of which 2,850,470 is steam and 1,211,559 sail; the foreign trade absorbs 1,314,402; the coast trade 2,738,080; whale fisheries 38,408; cod fisheries 77,- 539. In the same year the total tonnage built was 107,409,900, a falling oft' of over 25 per cent from the previous year, a de cline of about the same ratio against '7B aud of more than 125 per cent from the year '74. AREAS OF THE PRINCIPAL STATES &C., POP ULATION. In acreage Texas leads with 175,587,- 840; California with 100,992,040; Nevada with 71,739,000; Colorado 60,880,000; while Pennsylvania comes in for 29,440,- 000; and New York with 30,080,000; and little Delaware with 1,350,800. Iu popu lation New York leads with 5,083,810; Pennsylvania follows with 4,282,780; Ohio 3,198,288; Illinois 3,078-709; Mis souri 2,108.804 ; down to Delaware 146,- 054; and Wyoming Territory 20,788; and Alaska 40,441. The total number of acres of the public domain disposed of for the year is 9,194,376,84. POST OFF ICES AND POST ROUTES. The total number of postollices is 42,- 989 ;extent of the post routes 343,888; revenue to the department $33,315,479; cxpeuditures $30,542.804; salaries to post masters $7,718,784; transportation of the mail $22,255,984. POPULATION. The total population of the United States in JBOO was 5,308,483 against 50,- 152,800 in 1880. The school population of the States and Territories (1879) is about 15,000,- 000; number enrolled scholars, 9,422,680; number of scholars in daily attendance, 5,280,050; number oi teachers, 272,085; number of male teachers, 105,828; num ber of female teachers, 142,501; public school income about $83,704,038; expend iture,about $78,19,028; permanent school fund, $110,264,434; average daily attend ance 5.281,050. RELIGIOUS SEATS OF LEARNING. Total number of theological seminaries 131 ;of professors, 015; students, 4,734. Of these the Baptists lead with 18 semi naries and 858 students; the Roman Oatlr olics comes next with 17 seminaries, 129 professors and 940 students; then conies the Presbyterians, the figures being 15, 73, 017 ;Methodists Episcopal, 13, 57, 471; Protestant Episcopal,ls, 03, 272; Luther an, 14, 45, 401; Congregational, 10, 04, 304.
