Nichols, a son of Squire Nichols, who has been spending a few months here with liis father, has secured a situation in the Union depot at Atchiuson. We are pleased to learn that the Doctor will begin practice un der peculiarly favorable circumstances, as he has decided to locate in Louisvillo, Ky., where his uncle, I)r. GEO. W. GRIFFITHS, enjovs an extensive and lucrative practice, which he has generously offered to share with his nephew, thus affording him a remunera tive practice at the beginning of his profes sional career. In describing the class-day exercises at the Elmira College, the Free thus speaks of 31i>s PF.TRIE'S effort:—" The essay of Miss ANNIE M. PETRIE of Barclay, Pa., on the 'Scotch in America," was a bright, sparkling and earnest setting forth of what America owes to Scotchmen and Scotch iutluences. It was one of the best efforts of the day. Du ring the reading some of the clergymen 011 the platform seemed so well pleased with it, that the fair young reader was stopped for a little by applause from thein. We do not recollect another instance of the kind in the history of the college. Miss PF.TRIE'S essay closed the essays for the day and contained the few valedicoory thoughts usual 011 the occasion. They were well expressed, con taining among other things some very pleas ant allusions to the former lady principal of the institution, Miss ANNA BRONSON. TIANNAII SNYDER, mother of WM. SNY DER. Esq., of Sheshequin, died on Sunday at the advanced age of nearly 90 years. The funeral will take place at the Church in She shequin, to-day at 11 o'clock. Wednesday afternoon about four o'clock a tire broke out in the second story of S. KIR- P.Y & SONS' store in Nichols, N. Y. The building was entirely destroyed, but much of the goods were saved. The building was valued at §2,000 and insured for $1,200. The stock was insured $3,000 which will cover loss. It is stated that it is the purpose of the Massachusetts Greeubackers to enter the campaign this fall with their own candi date lor Governor. Contracts were made on Saturday to transport five million bushels of grain from Chicago to New York by railroad for fifteen cents per bushel. It was stated at the Tension Oftice Thursday morning that the pension list this year amounts to 70,000,000 dollars. It is estimated that 100,000,000 dollars will be required next year. Adams &. White's Lead Company's Works, near the city of Baltimore, Md., was burned yesterday. Loss 875,000. The Company recently refused to pay the city for the use of the fire department, and the flames were allowed to blaze away. Congress appropriated 8100,000 for twine, wrapping paper, scales, balances and marking stamps for the postal service throughout the country during the next fiscal year. The contracts for the above articles were awarded by the Department on Saturday, at prices so much lower than those of last year that 835,000 will be saved without diminishing the quan j tities.
