Rev. Edward Judsou, Baptist, has ter
minated his pastorate over the largest
and wealthiest congregation in Orange,
N. J., resigning a salary of .$5,000, to
commence preaching in the down-town
wards of New York city, lie is ambi
tious to give the poorer classes as good
preaching as the wealthy pay for. Mr.
Judsou has been exceptionally successful
at Orange.
Mr. Judsou says that he does this in
accordance with the custom of the Mas
ter, who preached the gospel to the poor
without money and without price, and as
inntouces have been few of ministers re
linquishing large salaries to preach thus,
he is ready to make one of the earliest
sacrifices. Such an instance disarme,
most effectually, the charge made by Rev.
McLarreu at a Cleveland convention, that
the rninistrial profession aimed to be the
ministers of the rich to the neglect of the
poor and clad themselves so daintily in
kid gloves and patent leather boots, that
they could not follow the Master into the
highways and hedges and slums, to save
souls.
There is more than the above ca*e.
Recently a rector of Brooklyn left a pros
perous parish to enter the missionary
field on our Westei n frontier. He has
already lost his wife,to whom the change
of climate was inhospitable. The moral
ist pauses to query whether two such
notable instances shall prove merely ex
ceptional, or are we to have a diversion
from the high and rich congregations, to
the slums, the steeets, the gutters, the
frontiers and the localities especially af
fected by the great Master? Is the doc
trine of regeneration to be armed with a
new power for giving the poor as well as
the, rich, the best preaching?
We might note a case nearer home.
One of the most zealous and able minis
ters in this county recently left a large
parish where he was receiving a remu
nerative salary, to take charge of a small
and very poor Baptist church with a sala
ry which barely affords him a livelihood
and yet is abilities would command more
than doub'.e the stipend he gets.
