FRIDAY June 10.
Notwithstanding tlie storm which lias
raged during the week, the attendance at the
Bradford County Teachers' Association was
fair in numbers and iu enthusiasm, and in
vim unsurpassed. The citizens here were
very kind and assiduous in their efforts to
make every one at home, and their success
was complete. The committee of arrange
ments, consisting of H. C. Green, R. M. llo
vey and Miss Yillie Mersereau, are entitled
to much credit for the succeess of the arrange
ments.
Tne morning session was very interesting
and principally devoted to the discussion of
resolutiens. The afternoon was similarly
passed, music being interspersed in pleasing
variety dnring each. Special topics being ta
ken up in school work during the day. The
evening session was largely attended and the
exercises very interesting. Prof. Benedict of
the Athens graded school read a puper enti.
tied " School Esthetics," which was listened
to attentively aud was a worthy effort, di
recting attention to the beautiful and higher
culture developed by attending to details iu
locating and beautifying the surroundings of
educational buildings. Rev. Mr. Hood oi
Athens delivered a lecture entitled " Self Cul
ture." Ue gave to the subject special inter
est by his eloqaent and original thoughts, re
taining the attention of his audience through
out. A vote of thanks was tendered the lec
turer and heartily given, Several recitations
were introduced to give variety, and all were
well rendered, those contributing being Miss
Fannie Kirby, Mastee Algie Hayden, Miss
May Decker aud Miss Nettie B. Spear. Mu
sic also contributed a share of the entertain,
raent, Miss Yillie Mersereau acting as orgau
ist; Miss Nellie Hovey of Ithaca, soprano,
Miss Lull, alto, Mr, Lament, tenor and Mr.
R. M. Hovey, bass. The music was excel
lent.
A special feature of the evening consisted
of choice refreshments served in the audtto
rium of the church, the sesstous being held
in the basement by the courtesy of the M. E.
Church. The refreshments were provided
by Mr. Howard Elmer of the Say re Laud Co.
and were on a scale commensurate with their
well known liberality and enterprising spirit.
The following citizens were active and un
tiring in serving the two hundred persons
who set down to the well filled tables. Mr.
aud Mrs. Hovey, Mr. and Mrs. Angier, Mrs.
and Miss Mersereau, Mr. H. C. Spalding, Mr.
Lament, Mr. Yonug, Dr. Scott. Mrs. Church,
Miss Peters, Miss Lull and others whose
uamcs we failed to get.
Prof. G. W. Kyau, County Superintendent,
was present and of course added much to the
interest of the sessions. The President of the
Association, Prof. E T. Burgan, of Towanda,
was at his post and diligently performed his
duties, aided by the efficient Secretary, 11. C.
Green and the committees.
Prof. Quinlan of Towanda was as usual
ready to asist with his well known ability.
O. H. P. Kinney was present and by saying
the right thing at the right time, edified the
assembly, as did Mr. J. F. Ovenshire, of the
Athens school board, Mr. J. B. Harding, of
the South Waverly school, gave a class drill
in English Grammar, having a class of his
pupils present. It was an interesting fea
ture. The remarks of Mr. H. E. Pitcher, up
on oral grammar were well received.
SATURDAY, Juno 11.
The first exercise after devotional duties
was Mental Arithmetic. Mr. C. E. Heverly
interested the teachars for a few moments.
History was then taken up by Miss Lottie
Dean and an interesting lesson given. Next
Prof. Quinlan took up this subjcet: "The
Subjunctive Mood," and gave a very interest
ing talk. Mr. Geo. Marshall treated the sub.
ject of " Ratio and Proportion." Some dis
cussion resulted upon methods. Mr. Bov
ingdon followed with a continuation of his
yesterdays' topic," Mathmatical Geography."
Miscellaneous work was introduced and a
variety of topies discussed
Mr. Ryan called attention to the premiums
offered by the Bradford County Agricultural
Society and urged teachers to aid in muking
the Educational Exhibit worthy, and not let
it fall below the established standard.
Hon. O. H. P. Kinney was called for and
responded in pleasant utterances.
R solutions thanking the citizens and oth
ers for their kindness were adopted and at 12
m., the Association adjourned.
To the L. T. RR. officers the teachers were
under great obligations for reduced rates of
fare and also for an invitation to visit their
extensive machine shops. Most of the teach
ers embraced the opportunity of inspecting
the complicated and powerful machines used
in railroad business, and were much pleased.
In conclusion let me remark that all the offi
cers of the Association and those having parts
to perform, did their duty to the satisfaction
of all interested. Th ■ people of Sayre will
not soon be forgo'ten. WILL.
