CHARLIE Houston is a better weather prophet than VKNNOR. lie said we would have fair weather after the moon changed, and we have it. When the excellence of rice as a diet is fully understood, its use will be more frequent and of daily occurrence in every household. At this season of the year especially, it may prop erly bo classed as superior to any of the cere als which are in such general use for the morning and midday meals. No other food is so easy of digestion, and at its present cost it is cheaper than potatoes, oat meal or grain grits of any kind. A GOOD AMUSEMENT CENTRE.—Never let us hear again that Alton is a " poor show town." Mercantile Hall and City Ilall both tilled to their full capacity last night give em phatic denial to that oft-told tale, and proved what the Democrat has often and always maintained, that a really good company will always be well patronized here while an in ferior one will often suffer. Both hulls were crowded. At the City Hall the New Orleans Minstrels drew a very large audience. The splendid band accompanying them charmed all hearers during the day and evening and the performance itself realized the high ex pectations it aroused. The New Orleans Minstrels are first-class. Their music, es pecially the cornet playing, is supurb. Their solos and quartettes were splendid and their double clogs irrestible. All in all thev fur nish an entertainment worth more than the price charged for admission. — Alton, (111.) Democrat. This company will appear in Mercur Hall Friday evening. The Commencement Exercises. The commencement exercises of the Sus quehanna Collegiate Institute were held in Mercur Hall, Thursday evening. Though the weather was inclement enough to justitiy people in staying at home, nevertheless a goodly number assembled to hear the music, the essay and the orations. The following is the programme: Oration, " Xenophon and the Ten Thousand.— Mark E. Bowman. Instrumental solo, L'Orgis Bauanale, Miss Frcd ereca Fox. Oration, the Catiliarlan conspiracy. Kent M. Bull, Quartette, Where has the Summer Fled? Misses Stewart, Passage and Woodruff' and Messrs. Mace and Turner. Essay, Blues. May Codding. Instrumental duet, Swedish Wedding March. — Misses Stewart, Calkins, Fox and Black. Oration, Value of Scientific, Study. 11. P. Corser. Solo and Chorus. My bright Heather Flower. Oration, The American Navy. W. V. Duggan. Instrumental solo, lloiuc, Sweet dome. Miss Anna F. Thomas, Oration, The Gracchi. William E. Lane Instrumental duet, Ungariche Rhopsodie, Misses Thomas and Stewart, on two pianos. Oration, Mathamatical studies. L. T>. Whitney. Quartette, Where are you going to my pretty Maid. Oration and Valedictory, Multum ex Parvo. A. F. Bronson. Mr. Bowman gave a brief account of the famous Grecian writer, Xenophon. He said that all, like Xenophon, should fully preparo themselves for any emergency in lite. Mr. Bowman has a good voice and with good drill will become on effective speaker. Mr. Bull gave us a good rendering of the old story of Catalius, Miss Codding's essay was very interesting. She depicted very clearly the misfortunes caused by the " blues" and gave us seme ex cellent advice. Mr. Corser's oration was finely written. A slight forgetfulness on his part was the only thing tliut marred one of the finest efforts of the evening, Mr. Duggan is known as the winner of the first prize in declamation at the Institute this year. We are sorry he forgot some of his thrilling oration, Mr. Lane has a fine presence and he has made marked improvement in speaking since the prize contest. Mr. Whitney's oration was solid fact and was delivered with energy. Mr. Bronson told us how our lives are, of ten influenced by small things. He was at ease upon the stage and did not show those defects which some times mar his speaking. We must not forget the music of the even ing. Miss Freddie Fox distinguished her self in playing " L'Orgie Bauanale." The instrumental solo " Home, Sweet Home," by Miss Thomas was finely rendered. The instrumental duets merit praise for their good execution. This was the largest class that has been graduated at the Institute for several years. We are glad of this. The earnest efforts of Prof. Quinlan should be recognized. There is no school in the land where pupils receive a more thorough drill in their studies than at the Susquehanna Collegiate Institute. W.
