Council Proceedings.
COUNCIL CHAMBER. June 0,1881.
The regular monthly session of the council
was held this evening, Burgess Alger in
the chair and all the members present except
Assistant Burgess Iloleomb.
Commuuieati lis, petitions and statements
frotn citizens being the fir-it business in order
under the rules, Mr. Robert Ganly entered
complaint of a nuisance near the foot of Eliz
abeth street, and on the hank of the river in
that vicinity. Councilman l'arscls moved
that the sanitary committee be in>tructed to
take measures io remove or abate the nuis
ance. Adopted.
Dr. Johnson presented a petition for tlie
improvement of Maple street, which on mo
tion was referred to the street committee of
all the wards, with instructions to report at
the next regular meeting of the council.
F. J. Ilungerford, representing the Hook
and Ladder Company, asked for an appropri
ation for purchasing shirts.
1). VValborn petitioned for a culvert on Water
street near the Prothonotary's oflice, and pro
posed to pay part of the expense.
The application of Mantua Company for an
appropriation was first considered. Council
man Spalding said that an appropriation of
S4O had been made to the company last year,
that the company had expended the amount
on improvements on the rooms occupied by
them for storing their apparatus, that it hav
ing become necessary for the borough gov
ernment to lake possession of the rooms to
use for other purposes, and would make use
of the lumber and doors paid for by the com
pany so far as it could he used to advantage,
lie was in 'avor of granting another appro
priation. Mr. Spalding then moved that an
appropriation of S4O be made to the Mantua
Hook and Ladder Company, and that any
lumber and doors furnished by the company
in reoairing room shall he used in improving
the station house. Adopted.
On motion of Councilman ilahm the street
commissioner was authorized to build a cul
vert in the rear of the Prothonotary's ollioe
on Water street, providing Dar.iefWalborn
will furnish and deliver the stone necessary
for the work.
On motion of Councilman KeeJer, Seneca L
Arnold was appointed a special policeman to
act at the west end of the Bridge during the
pleasure of the council, without pay.
Bills amounting to $439.59 were examined
and approved by the finance committee, ami
the secretary directed to draw orders for
payment, The following is a schedule of ex
