Mrs. TIIRKSSA WALKER, who had been an
invalid for several years, died at the residence
of her son-in-law, O. C. Posx, on York Ave
nue, on Sunday. She leaves two children,
Mrs. POST and FRED WALKER, to mourn her
loss. The funeral will be held at the house
to-morrow afternoon at 4 o'clock.
The dogs recently received by Rev. CFIAS
F. KELLEY from the old country, are not St.
Bernards, but what are known as the Leon
burg, the most valuable and higli-priced spe
cies of canines bred, and are the only spe
cimens of this peculiar breed in this country.
Speaking of the St. Bernard dogs, tlie Bos
ton Herald says a young woman of "culture"
recently declared she "would like to have one
of those Sarah Bernard dogs that dig the dear
old monks out of the snow in Switzerland."
Referring to the fearful, steam boiler explo
sion which happened in Philadelphia this
week, by which several lives were lost and
buildings demolished, we remind owners of
steam boilers in this vicinity that Codding A
Dodge. General Insurance Agents, issue
policies insuring against loss or damage by
explosion of steam boilers, also insure plate
glass against accidents, and issue daily or an

Rev. D. R. FORD, I>. 1)., of the Elmira Fe
male C liege, will deliver the annual address
before the Philoniathean and Institute Scien
tific societies of the Institute, this evening
in Mercur Ilall, commencing at 8 o'clock-
Subject, " Books and Travels." No admiss
ion fee will he charged and the public arc cor
dially invited. From the reputation Doctor
FORD enjoys we have 110 hesitation in proph
esying that the lecture will be both edifying
and entertaining, and we hope to see the hall
filled. Our citizens owe it to themselves and
the good name of our town to come out on
such an occasion.
i After the lecture a fair and festival will be
held in the hall.
CHEEK. —Mr. RuRDKTTE,of the Burlington.
Ilawkeye has this to say about " cheek
No, my son, cheek is not better than wisdom;
it is not,'better than modesty; it is not better
than anything. Don't listen to the siren who
tells you to blow your own horn, or it, will
never be tooted upon. The world is not to he
deceived by cheek, and it, does search for
merit, and when found, merit is rewarded.
Cheek never deceives the world, my son. It
appears to do so to the cheeky man, but he is
the one who is deceived. Do you know one
cheeky man in all your acquaintance who is
not reviled for kis check the moment his back
is turned? Is the world not continually draw
ing distinctions between check and merit?
Almost everybody hates a cheeky man, my
son. Society tires at the brassy glare of bis
face, the noisy assumption of his forwardness.
The triumphs of cheek are only apparent, lb 1
bores his way along through the world, and
frequently better people give way for him.
But so they give way, my son, for a man with
a paint pot in each hand. Not because they
respect the man with the paint pot, particu
larly, hut because they want to take care of
their clothes. You sell goods without it, and
your customers won't run and hide in the
cellar when they see you coming.
