The Daily Review. Towanda, Pa., Tuesday, June 7, 1881. EDITORS . 8. W. ALVORD. NOBLE N.ALVORD. " Daily Mievittr " only 25 cent! per month. Try it. America is the only nation in the world that is rapidly and systematically paying what it owes. None of the European countries have done anything in the last ten years towards decreasing their na tional indebtedness except England and the Netherlands, and their efforts have been insignificant compared to ours, while all the other powers have been loading themselves with debt and piling increased burdens upon the taxpayers and producing cl asses. In this we can see the reason of the increased immigra tion to our shores which during the past year has been unprecedented, for although the financial aclievements of our govern ment have become such common occur rences that they no longer excite sur prise at home, they have awaken inter ests abroad. This is seen in every in coming steamer. The reduction in the public debt for May, according to the statement which has just been issued frrm the Treasury department, is sll,- 150,721 and if this mouth's record be as cood, the total reductions for the fiscal year will be the enomous sum of SIOO,- 000,000 in round numbers. If any of the great financiers of foreign potentates could report such a surplus as our Secre tary of the Treasury finds at his disposal on the last day of every month, it would turn the heads of the ablest financiers and upset all the fine-spun theories of the economists in the old world. A suit in equity has been begun by Peter llerdic against ex-Judge Williams, D. Kelly, the Ilerdie Personal Transpor tation Company of Philadelphia, and oth ers, to restrain proceedings upon the execution and levy upon the property of the comany. The bill sets forth the facts of the organization of the company and the plaintiff's interest therein. Ilh avers that during his absence an agreement for an amicable action and confession of judgment between Kelly and the Trans portation Company was signed, the judg ment confessed being $45,475. The same day a judgment was entered, execution issued and a levy made upon the horses, coaches and other chattels of the com pany. The confession of the judgment purports to be for the amount found due Kelly for mouey advanced by him and the company and for money paid for the com pany's accounts. This action was taken without the knowledge of the plaintiff. Kelly informed plaintiff that the company owed him SIO,OOO, and all over that sum plaintiff claims to be fictitious and made up 011 a pretended debt. The plaintiff avers that the judgment was entered by fraud and collusion between Kelly, the officers of the company and the former President. An injunction restraining the proceedings for five days was granted Senator Edmunds and other counsel for the French Cable Company, appeared in the United States Circuit Court in New York Friday, to ask for an in junction on behalf of the French com pany restraining the American Union Telegraph Company from closing their offices. The argument will be heard in a few days. Commissioner Raum has sent out a circular to the banks informing them that the collections made this year will be in accordance with his desisiou recent ly rendered in the case of the Internation al Bank of Chicago. In pursuance of this plan, he will have an examination made of all the banks in the leading cities. About two thousand pensioners of the late war were paid off in New York on Saturday.
