The Dailv Review. Towanda, Pa., Saturday, June 4, 1881. EDITORS . S. W. ALVORD. NOBLK N.ALVOUD. " Daily KFRI* JT " only M 5 emit per month. Try it. We observe that the friends of our ge nial old friend, Ezra Rutty, of North To wanda, contemplate presenting his name to the Republican County Convention, this fall, as a candidate for the nomina tion for the oilice ot County Commission er. The name of a better man for the po sition will not be presented to that as semblage. Ezra's avoirdupois brings clown the scales at about 240 pounds, but his generosity and good nature tips the beam at something like four tons, —more or less. Ezra was a true and tried sol dier in the late "ouplcasantncss,"—hav ing been a member of the famous One Hundred and Forty-First Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, from the time it entered the service until it returned with decimated ranks, but with undying honor and fame, won on more than half a hundred fields of battle. From the in ception of the Republican Party, Ezra has been an active, earnest and eflicieut work er for the spread of its principles and success of its candidates. No man of this county is more worthy of recogni tion at the hands of the party, than is he, and if service in the ranks of the organi zation entitles a man to recognition, his nomination is assured. AVe have writ ten this not to disparage the claims of any one, but simply in justice to one who is, in our judgment, justly entitled to even a higher and more lucrative olllce than the one named; and we candidly be lieve the party will honor itself in honor ing him.— Reporter. There is an indecency in the haste with which a part of the secular papers seize upon reports criminating, falsely or tru ly, ministers of the Gospel, theological students, Elders, and private Christians, of which all respectable newspaper men should be most heartily ashamed. A short time ago it was circulated by means of the "Associated Press," that two stu dents of Philips Academy, Audover, Massachusetts, had attempted to com mit a burglary, that one of them had been shot, and that both were candidates for the ministry. Concerning this the Cougregationalist , of Boston, says: "The facts are, as we arc informed by the au thorities, that the two brothers were day scholars at the Philips Academy, who, although older than many of their fellow students, were in the lowest class m the school; and who, although unsuspected of any criminal inclination and regarded well for their perseverence in study, were so far from being religiously dis posed as to be atheists, openly disavow ing any belief in the soul's immortality and in the existence of a God."—Prcsby * terian Banner. No wonder money is cheap and that railroad enterprises "of great pith and moment" are being pushed to rapid com pletion. The country seems to be enter ing on the season of unexampled perity. We are gathering in gold from Europe by millions, and will probably sell this year two hundred and eighty millions of products more than we buy. We arc also gatheiing wealth producing muscles in the thousands of well-to-do emigrants that daily land on our shores. As long as there are untilled lands in the South and West to which these sturdy men and women can go and become at once self-supporting, every able-bodied emigrant is a gain. Public officials are very glad to secure the influence of newspapers when seek ing ollicial position, but as soon as elect ed they are too prone to forget the friends who have helped them into office. It is an acknowledged fact that the White Sewing Machine now stands pre eminent among first-class machines, for its simplicity and light-running qualities. It is a mechanical fact that the White Sewing Machine is made from the best material and of excellent workmanship, and all its wearing parts are adjustable, so that lost motion can be "taken up" in an instant. It is an undisputed fact that the dura bility of the White Sewing Machine is sustained by a written warranty for live years. It is a progressive fact that the White embodies the most practical and usefui improvements of other sewing machines, together with advantages peculiarly it.- own. It is a money-making fact that tin Wnite is the easiest-selling selling ma chine in the market, and therefore all wide-awake dealers make it their specialty. It is a gratifying lact that the White gives universal satisfaction, and that it i steadily and rapidly increasing in public favor. CAUTION. Do not be imposed upon by agents and partie who are interested in the purchase and sale of othe machines. It has become a common trick for un scrupulous competitors to get a White machine and put it in bad order so that they might prejudice pur chasers against it and in favor of their own machines. To guard against such contemptible trickery, we advise all intending purchasers to correspond with us direct, and we will take pleasure in giving them the address of a regular authorized dealer for the "White" in their county, or we will ofl'er to sell them a machine direct at special prices, and guaran tee satisfaction in every respect. •W.
