Booth and the Lord's Prayer.
When the elder Booth was residing in
Baltimore, a pious, urbane old gentleman
of that city, hearing of his wonderful
power of elocution, one day invited him
to dinner, although deprecating the stage
and theatrical performances. A large
company sat down at tlie table, and, on
returning to the drawing room, one of
them asked Booth as a special favor to
them all, to repeat the Lord's Prayer.
He signified his willingness to gratify
them and all eyes were lixed upon him.
lie >lowly and reverently arose from his
chair, trembling with the burden of two
great conceptions. He had to realize the
character, attributes and presence of the
Almighty Being lie was to address. He
was to transform himself into a poor,
sinning, stumbling, benighted, needy
supplicant, offering homage,asking bread
pardon light and guidance. Says one of
the company who was present.
'•lt was wonderful to watch the play
of emotion that convulsed his counte
nance. lie became deadly pale, and his
eyes turned trembling upward, were wet
with tears. As yet he had not spoken.
The silence could be felt; it had become
absolutely painful, until at last the spell
was broken, as if by an electric shock, as
his rich toned voice syllabled fourth,
'Our Father, who art in heaven,' with a
pathos and fervid solemnity which thrill
ed all hearts. lie finished; the silence
continued; not a voice was heard : not a
muscle moved in this rapt audience until
from a remote corner of the room a sub
dued sob was heard, and the old gentle
man (the host) stepped forward with
streaming eyes and tottering frame and
seized Booth by the hand. 'Sir' said lie,
in broken accents, 'you have afforded nie
a pleasure for which my whole future life
will feel grateful. lam an old man, and
every day from my boyhood to the pres
ent time, I have repeated the Lord's
Prayer but I never heard it before, nev
er!' 'You are right,' replied Booth.
'To read that prayer as it should be read
caused me the severest study and labor
for thirty years, and I am far from satis
lied with my rendering of that wonderful
production. Not one person in ten thou
sand comprehends how much beauty,ten
derness and grandure can be eondeused
in a space so simple. The prayer itself
sufficiently illustrates the truth of the Bi
ble and stamps upon it the seal of diviu
itv.' "

Leaving off Drinking.
Sir William Gull, one of the most emi
nent of English physicians, interrogated
on the subject of "leaving off drinking,"
says.
"With regard to leaving off drinking, I
think that we could, as a rule, stop the
supply of alcohol at once without injury.
As to the existence of cases in whien tbe
brain had entirely gone from leaving
drinking off suddenly, is not that fallac
ious? May not their brains have gone
from their previous habits? As to the
alleged case in which a man left off drink
suddenly for a year and was then obliged
to go back to it again. Ido not see any
good in breaking off drinking habits by
degrees. If you are taking poison into
the blood I do not see the advantage of
diminishing the degrees of it from day to
day. This point has bjen frequently put
to me by medical men; but my reply lias
been, if your patient was poisoned by
aresuic would you still go on putting in
the arsenic? In reference to a person
who carries a great deal of drink and does
not get drunk, he may be even more dam
aged than a man who does get drunk, be
cause he may be able to carry his system
of daily drinking for a long time, where
as the other man who wos incapable of
drinking so much would be obliged to
discontinue his practice."
It is quite certain that political obliga
tions incurred in sustaining "bossism"
in the Republican party in this county
are no longer to be recognized by the
rank and tile, and the man who wants to
be county treasurer or candidate for any
other oflice, must present some better ar
gument than that he has been promised
the position by a few individuals who
have heretofore arrogated to themselves
autority to dictate nominations.
