We have interviewed a pupil of Ike
Walton from whom we gather the follow
ing piscatorial information, a synopsis
of which we arrange for our readers.
He says the fishing in the Susquehanna
so far this season has been unusually
good, larger hauls having been made than
in some years past. Spearing was suc
cessfully indulged in till the recent rise
which put a veto to this unique mode of
Ashing, the water being too muddy to
see the finny chaps. Spearing is done at
night, the boat carrying a jack or fire box I
in which a bright light is kept up by
means of fat pine or kerosine which ena
bles the fisherman to see the river bot
tom and pick up oa a spear the game
that may come within the reach of the
savage instrument.
Our informant confesses that this may
be regarded as a piratical way of fishing,
not "tony" as the hook and line method
but nevertheless it has the most fun and
excitement and usually brings a good
haul.
He says the atreams having swolen a
little, now is a boss time for the out-line
and no doubt a lively run of eels will fol
low. Dark nights are preferred; a boat
is required to run over the line, bait the
hook and take oft* the fish. Not much
skill is required to fish this way and boss
and professional fishermen who delight
iu the use of the fancy section rod and
duplex reel will not resort to it.
He reports a big increase of bull-heads
and pickeral,—saying he never knew
them so large nor plenty before. Black
bass, the tony and gamy fish,of the river
promises to be abundant and of a larger
size than heretofore. The story of the
ice and cold winter having killed them is
all bosh. He thinks the Susquehanna
would be to-day one of the best streams
east of the Mississippi for fish if the Co
lumbia and other dams were removed or
arranged to let shad come up. But as it
is he thinks we need not complain, espec
ially those living along or near the river.
In conclusion he says the worst feature
of the matter is the excitement and fas
cination that attaches itself to the busi
ness which in too many cases blunts a
mans enterprise, paralyzes his regard for
the truth as regards what he catches and
in flue unstrings and unfits him for any
other work during the season. The mo
ment he grinds up his flsh pole and sets
out you can cancel him in a social and
business point of view till the season
ends, as he is quite oblivious to his sur
roundings and puts other engagements to
a discount. A nibble at his pole as he
dozes away, hudgry and wet, maguetizes
him; to catch a chub stirs his whole en
ergy. aud a bass so intoxicates him
that you may as well bid him
good bye to every surrounding but flsh.
In ordinary matters his word may be
good, but for his flsh stories, make a tre
mendous allowance.
Hubbell's letter to Garfield, requesting
the latter to write to Brady, is as follows:
I am a great deal annoyed in interesting
friends to aid in carrying on my work in
this campaign. Mauy are apathetic, and
while they are profuse in good wishes
and ready to encourage by words, yet
that does not pay pointing bills and other
expenses. General Brady of the post of
fice department seems to think that you
do not care for his aid, and is for some
unknown reason inclined to be cool tow
ard you. lam satisfied that on an inti
mation from you that such things would
be appreciated he would perhaps do
something for me. Indeed he has inti
mated as much to me. Won't you please
set him right or iu someway express a de
sire for his aid, for I need help very much
just now?
If any body thinks he can make out
anything against the President from this
little correspondence he must be a fool

Our popular artist, G. 11. WOOD, is gaining
a reputation for excellence of work which is
making Towanda famous. He received the
following flattering letter on Saturday from
p, delighted customer:
CAMDEN, N. Y., May 11th, 1881.
Mr. GEO. 11. WOOD :
My Dear Sir— The picture arrived this
morning, and was paid for and taken in less
than two seconds after it was opened. It is
without doubt the finest picture of any kind
in town; in fact, the finest I ever saw at any
price.
I cannot compliment you sufficiently for
your talent, and assure you that you will
never regret the labor bestowed on this piece
of work; it will be productive of other simi
lar work from this section and to no small
amount. I have no doubt that by putting it
on exhibition in window I could secure you
hundreds of dollars worth of work. I have
compared it with former one of same subject
made by you at sls I think, and this is very
much finer.
My wife, who is a daughter of the subject,
is perfectly carried away; you may consider
her under obligations to you. Again thank
ing you, I remain, Tours, &c.

This remedy is something new, both as to name
and composition. This is one of the wonders of the
world. This Syrup, I claim, is better and more
effective than any other ever offered to the ople of
America or any other country, and what 1 say of
this I can prove, This Syrup, like the Pills, is
harmless and safe. It contains no opium or other
narcotic poison, like the most Syrup, and is not dis
agreeable to take. Any child will take it. And it
will cure any and all inflammations arising from
Gold. It is superior to all others in every respect
and especially for the following reasons:
