justice to Kansas and all con cerned, will be my aim in this letter. Kansas is justly and properly termed a great agricultural State, having an undu lating surface, rich soil and a genial cli mate, subject to drouths and other ca lamities that visit other and older States of our country. To say that wc have more frequent drouths would be saying what is not true, as experience and his tory will prove. lam now speaking ol the Eastern and Central parts of the State where cultivation is general. The record which has been carefully kept, shows a steady increase of rain-fall as general settlement and cultivation moves on west. The use of the plow and the growing of timber does have an influence that can not be gainsayed or denied, in that direction. Western Kansas, or that portion of the state west of the 100 th meridian, is as yet very uusafe for settlement and I would not advise any man who thinks of making the west his future home to take any chances, from its altitude and from its near approach to those arid plains in Eastern Colorado. This season is an ex ception as wheat and corn looks very promising throughout all that section. Eastern and Ceutral Kansas never look ed more promising at this season of the year, than now. While we had a cold, long winter, with considerable snow, for this climate, yet when spring came, warm sunshine and gentle showers accompa nied it,and vegitation of all kinds is some weeks in advance of last season at this date. Wheat and corn, the great staples of Central Kansas, promise an abundant harvest. Wheat was supposed to be pretty seriously damaged in early spring by the severity of the winter, but the ear ly spring together with the rain fall has forced the growth of wheat beyond the most sanguine expectations of those mostly interested. Now as to MePher. 5 01) county, the one I am most interested in. We have a larger acreage of wheat than ever before, sown this season and the same with corn and oats. The pres ent indications are good for the largest receipts from that industry that has ever been realized in our county. The farm ers are hopeful, which gives life and vim to ail industries. The present growth of our embryo city is an indication of an increasing faith in capitalists that, sur rouning the city, within the county is a rich and frugal class or farmers. With our present railroad facilities together with the promise we have of larg agricul tural receipts giving confidence to men of means we shall make a rapid growth again this summer. New homes are looming up all over the city. Drs. Day and Murphy, and O. Heggelrond have the cellar dug, where another large brick block will soon be completed. Three large brick blocks were built the past season, and several more will be put up during this season. The contract for building a twelve or fifteen thousand dol lar school house is about being made. The school house is to be completed for the fall term of school. I still insist that Eastern ahd Central Kansas is full of promises to young men of energy, who expect to make the W°' fc rheir future home. IfayouDg mau can come here with §SOO or §I,OOO, he cou do better than in any part of the couulry I ever visited. Hi must come here, roll up his sleeves and go to work, and success is bevoiul a doubt. Too many come lieie without money expecting to live without much effort, (which is a sad mistake) get liomeeick and go back disgusted with the country that wont furnish them a liv ing without work. They return East (if they can) aud cannot say enough against Kansas. In conclusion I will say that 1 purpose writing a few letters for your readers perusal and say what 1 kuow to be facts as to the country and its outlook. If any of the readers of your worthy pa per come west and visit Mcpherson coun ty, we will extend to them the hand of friendship aud show them as line a coun ty of farming land as you ever visited.
