Sketch of William H. Robertson—His Pub
iic Services.
Judge William 11. Robertson, the new
Collector of the Port of New York, has
long been prominent in New York poli
tics. He is a native of Westchester coun
ty, and is 58 years of age. He was edu
cated at Bedford, Westchester County,
and was admitted to the bar in 1817. lie
was elected as Superintendent of the Bed
ford Common Schools soon after attain
ing his majority, and retained that posi
tion for many years. lie was first elected
to the Assembly in 18R>, being then but
2G years of age,and served for two years,
lie was elected to the State Senate from
tlie Westchester district in 1854 and was
a Senator in '55, '72, '73, '74, '75, '7(5, and
'77. lie gave a vigorous support to the
bill establishing free schools through the
State. He served in the Senate as Chair
man of the Committee on Commerce and
Navigation, as Chairman of the Commit
tee on Rules, Library and Judiciary and
as President pro teni. in 1874, '75, '7G,and
'77. He was County Judge of Wes,Ches
ter County for twelve years, being con
secutively elected for three terms. lie
was chosen as Presidential Elector in
18G0 and was then elected to a seat in the
Fortieth Congress. He was delegate to
the Republican National Conventions in
1804 and 187G and 1880, and he has been
repeatedly sent as delegate to the Whig
and Republican State conventions. He
served'as member of the Republican State
committee for six consecutive years and
was made Chairman of the Miltary Com
mittee appointed by Governor Morgan in
18G2 to raise and organize State troops in
the Eighth Senatorial District. lie was
the Commissioner appointed to superin
tend the draft in Westchester County in
the early part of tlie war and was the
Brigade Inspector of the 7tli Brigade for
six years. In 187G lie received from
Williams College the degree of LL. I).
He was elected to the present Senate by
a majority of 147 over his Democratic
conipetor, Mr. Richard Lathers. At the
opening of the session lie was re-elected
President pro tern, of the Senate For
more than thirty years Judge Robertson
lias been in public life. Wh°n the auti
third-terni feeling was aroused in the
Empire State, Judge Robertson, as a del
egate to Chicago, became the leader of
the Independent Republicans, and in the
National Convention fully carried out tlie
determination which he had previously
openly declared, and led the anti-Grant
forces in the revolt in the State delega
tion. lie was for Blaine, but when the
break came he went with his colleagues
for Garfield.
It was an old time Universallst who de
clared that no thoughtful man could be
lieve in a hell aud disbelieve in the perfect
goodness of God in the presence of that
simple argument, a disli of strawberries
aud cream. It is gratifying to learn that
the Universalist's argument of strawber
ries will be very plentiful this season, aud
also a better quality than heretofore. A
splendid crop is predicted, and improved
species have been steadily crowding out
the older varieties. The next warm wea
ther following these recent rains will
bring the berries to a marketable condi
tion in large quantities.— Albany Express,
Will the legislature of New York stul
tify itself? Only a few weeks ago the
members passed a resolution thanking
the President for appointing Robertson.
Conkling and Piatt now ask them to cen
sure Mr. Garfield by endorsing their silly
action in resigning because the President
would not withdraw Robertson's nomina
tion !
