EDITORS REVIEW :—We have just seen a private letter from Senator John I. Mitchell iu which ho expresses himself as in accord with the President, and that he knew no reason at present why Rob ertson should not be coilrmed. We think the people will rejoice that we have a Senator who has the courage to "set up for himself." Republicans have no cause to be alarmed at the resignation of Conk ling and Piatt. It is simply evident that Coukliug knows lie is defeated, and that he proposes to step down and out of the Senate long enough to let Robertson be confirmed. Both Senators will undoubt edly be their own successors, as soou as the New York Legislature takes action iu the matter. We are sorry, however, that Senator Piatt was not brave enough to "set up for himself," also. It is certain ly a discredit to a great State like New York, that her two senators are so nar row-minded, that they must get in a rage and pass in their resignations, about so trivial a matter as oue ollice in their State. GAM n ETTA. In Texas the public lands are at the disposal of the State Government. A few weeks ago the Texas Legislature passed a bill declaring that all persons who are now residents of the State, and who were residents at the opening of the war and enlisted in the military service of the State or Confederate States, and were permanently disabled while in the service shall each receive a land certificate for 1,280 acres of land. The provision ap plies to widows whose husbands died or were killed in service, and who show that they have not property to the value of SI,OOO. This shows that Texas is dis posed to treat the disabled soldiers of the Confederacy more generously than the National Government has treated the vet erans ol the Union army. And yet there are those who complain that the govern ment has done too much for the soldiers that fought its battles. As Texas is now a reconstructed State, the Legislature might have included Texas veterans of all classes, as well as Confederates, but it didu't. A witty politician who sometimes visits the REVIEW oilice, says tlxe Gar field-Coukling affair reminds him very forcibly of the annecdote of the parrot and monkey: "A pious lady purchased from a sailor a parrot which was guaran teed not to use profane language. It hap pened the lady was the owner of a pet monkey, and soon alter bringing the bird home, slie had occasion to go out on a shopping expedition for a few hours, leaving the parrot and monkey alone. When she returned she found the lloor strewn with feathers and the parrot sat perched over the door, with only a single feather left in his tail, and the monkey was master of the situation. When the Mistress cast her eye toward the parrot lie explained the situation by exclaiming, 'we've had ah—l of a time.' " A California paper gives a loud scold to women "who pay dressmaker's bills with the money which ought to bo pur chasing a home or paying for their chil dren's education." We will stake four nickels against a cent that the same edi tor drinks at a San Francisco bar and smokes his Havana regularly. We doubt not that some wives are improvident and extravagant, but for every woman of this class there are a score of men guilty of the same fault. As a rule, wives and mothers are more economical and provi- dent than husbands and fathers. While we would not screen the women whose vanity leads them to such excess as to justify the criticism made, yet, to speak of them as a class in this way, is an un justifiable slander, without regard to facts. A large number of Nihilists will shortiy be expelled from Lcipsic, including prob ably three leading members of the Reich stag. ■w.fjr-f* ■-mtJirr.r^trrue TJR. A. E.
