Sena tors : Iu the front row of seats, on the Re publican side of the Senate Chamber, sits Don Cameron, of Pennsylvania. To my thinking he is oue of the handsomest men in the Senate. He is straight and slender as a Lombardy poplar and carries himself as erect as an Indian. Ilis abun dant hair is of that peculiar red-gold shade so often seen in the paintings of the old Venetian masters. The firm mouth is shaded by a long, silky moustache. The steel-gray eyes and strongly marked cliiu are indicative ul the resolute will which his father, Geu. Simon Cameron, and himself have inherited from their staunch Scotish ancestors. Of the for mer it has often been said "lie was never known to forget a favor or was false to a friend." lam inclined to believe that the same thing cau be said of his sou; and surely no man need ask for higher praise. Senator Mitchell, the newly elected lie publican Senator from Pennsylvania, is just now "the observed of all observers," especially by the visitors from the Key stone State. One of the doorkeepers as sured me that no Senator received more calls and cards than had Mr. Mitchell during the present session of the Senate. A method of showing attention and re spect that I opine Senator Mitchell would willingly dispense with. But then one of the penalties of greatness in the Congress of the United States is this same shower of paste boards, "from your constituents, you know." Mr. Mitchell's election was quite as much of a surprise to himself as to his friends. In fact, like Lord Byron, "he woke up one morning and found himself famous." Ilis eleetiou was proceeded by a fierce and hotly-contested battle be tween opposing factious of the Republi can party, which threatened to destroy its unity and harmony in the grand old Commonwealth. It was with a jubilant sense of satisfaction that all who desired the prosperity of true Republicanism, lieaid the glad tidings that the choice had fallen 011 one whose integrity of purpose in the past was a guaranty of his fidelity in the future. A certain sturdy self-re liance of character inspired confidence, which his straightforward course as a Republican in Congress had strengthened. Mr. Mitchell has a liue physique. Ilis complexion is fair and ruddy. He lias abundant brown hair, which he disar ranges by running his fingers through it when laboring under excitement. Ilis kindly blue eyes and magnetic smile are sure to win confidence and set the flutter ing heart of the ollice seeker at ease. 111 justice to himself, Mr Mitchell ought to make a holocaust of several photograph ers and engravers; lor the pictures that are called portraits, are postive carica tures. Not one of them look half as well as he does. No Senator ever entered up on his responsible duties who more fully possessed the admiring regards of his constituents. The movement against the Jews in Russia is 011 so large a scale as to divert public attention from the Nihilists. The cause of the ostracism, persecution, is said lobe purely social, not religious. The Llkraine is described as filled with Jews. As in other European countries they are money-lenders, spirit dealers and traders, and they pretty much keep in hand both landlords and peasants. The latter probably have discovered, like other people, that "it is easier to kill and torture than to pay honest debts." That has been the case we believe, in the his ! Tory of the Jewish people. Sir Walter Scott has made it pretty plain that such a condition of things once prevailed in Eng land, and that the race was made to suf fer pretty much as they now do in Russia. Money making is becoming a sin, and the quicker people who need the lesson real ize it, the less killing of Jews will there be in Russia, as an easy way to pay cred itors. | A. E.
