The President has the support of near
ly the entire press of the country, in the
contest which has been forced upon him.
There is no more reprehensible prac
tice among the young women of the pres
ent day than the use of cosmetics. These
invariably contain poisonous ingredients
which, when applied to the skin are cer
tain to effect the health injuriously. What
ever they may seem to add temporarily
to female beauty, is certain to be coun
terbalanced by impaired health, and per
haps death. Such a death lias been re
ported within the past week. It is the
latest of an innumerable line of similar
cases. A custom so destructive, both of
health and beauty, should have few ad
vocates among American women, whose
beauty requires no aid from such a dan
gerous ally.
The decimal system of coinage is by uni
versal consent the simplest now in use
iu civilized nations. No less than five
separate parliamentary committees have
advocated its adoption by England during
the past half century, but that progress
ive country has sturdily set itself against
its adoption, lieceutly a member of Par
liament offered a resolution proposing its
adoption, but there was at once a tre
mendous outcry against the proposed in
novation, and members declared that
they would as soon think of abolishing
the House of Lords or doing something
equally dreadful, as to give up their
pounds, shillings and pence. John Bull
is more obstinately wedded to custom
than any of the other members of the
large family of nations.
The Political Situation.
We view with much alarm the intense,
though surpressed feeling that now exists
iu the ranks of true Republicans. Alien
ations are being effected that will be dif
ficult, if not impossible, to restore.
The Boston Traveller speaks sensibly in
the following article:
It may be, we doubt not that it is, the
fact, that Senator Conkling views the
nomination of Judge Robertson with dis
like. It may be that President Garfield
is earnestly desirous of having Judge
Robertson confirmed. They are both
strictly within their rights in these con
trary altitudes. But the Republican par
ty has a there rs any talk of split- '
ting its forces over this comparatively
trivial divergence of views, to say that
the occasion is not commensurate with
the possible results. It lias a right to in
sist, if need be, that Judge Robertson
and the Collectorsbip of New York are
not large enough bones of contention for
a whole party to struggle over. It will,
if it comes to that, declare that the Em
pire State must not be jeopardized in or
der that one man who is not and never
lias been Mr.' Conkling's friend may be
removed, and another man, who appears
to be regarded as Mr Conkling's bete noir,
shall be put in his place. It will tlually
demand that, where no question of prin
ciple but a simple question of men is ii -
volved, there shall be away out found
that will spare the country the sorry
spectacle of a great party going to pieces
over a little office. The Republican party
eau get along very well without a Conk
ling mau in the New York custom house,
and so it can without having a Blaine
mau there. But it cannot get along at
all without the imperial State of New
York in the Republican column, and thai
necessitates harmony iu the Republican
ranks there. There is no split yet, and
there must be no split, except such a
splitting of the difference as will bring
unity and peace all around.
