It will pay you to read their advertisement to be found elsewhere in this issue. • Have you been to Titus' confectionery store and tried some of that celebrated Wyoming county Ice Cream? We have and unhesita tingly pronounce it the best we have ever eaten. Call and got some. The steamboat Lyman Truman, recently purchased in Owego by a Wilkesbarre com pany to plv between that city and Nanticoke, prives to be too heavy draught. Yesterday's Union-Lender says: The new steamer- "Tremaine" which was lately purchased by Plymouth parties for use on the river here, ran aground again yester day on an up trip and her passengers were transferred in squads to the little "Clipper" and carried back to Plymouth. It is to be re gretted that so large and handsome a vessel, which must have cost a pretty good sum of money, is rendered useless a large'part of the seasbn by reason of her heavy draught. Yes terday the water in the Susquehanna was three feet higher than it usually is during the long dry season, and yet she could not navi gate. This undoubtedly proves that the ves sel is a failure here, and her owners certainly will have the sympathy of the community in the loss which "must necessarily follow so'un fortuuate an investment." We have received from L. 11. Rogers, New York, a "Bird's Eye View of the English Language," a regular monument of patience. The sheet is 22x38 inches, and contains more information for persons who write letters than we ever saw or thought could be arrang ed on one sheet. Price 25- cents. The first part contains rules for spelling and punctua tion, also rules for using capital letters and letter writing. Next is a "Bird's Eye View of the Correct Spelling of 25,000 Words." Every word is before jou at a single glance, and is easily found by a system of indexing, that is wonderful, thorough and complete. There is also a "Bird's Eye View of 20,000 Synonyms." which is of great assistance to writers. One of the most interesting features which alone, is worth the small price of the sheet, is a list of 2,000 words of similar pro nunciation, such as, the colonel ate the kernel, the mayor owned a fast trotting mare, a bot tle of scent cannot be sent by mail for a cent, the doctor's patients were out of patience at not being allowed to call aloud to the assis tants for assistance. I missed my way in the mist. &c., &c. The sheet can be used to good advantage by every one who writes the Eng ligh Language. The sheets are sent by mail, postage prepaid, by the publisher, L. 11. Rogers, 75 Maiden Lane, New York City. Price 25 cents each, or live sheets for one dollar. Postage stamps received in payment. The question whether tags on samples of merchandise containing figures indicating price and width are mailable as fourth-class matter was recently brought to the attention of the post-office department by some leading dry goods firms in New York, Boston and other points. The ruling of the department upon this question will be found embodied in the following general order, which has just been issued by Postmaster General JAMKS: "Tugs or labels attached to samples of mer chandise may have the price and width of the goods printed thereon, either by the original impression or by a hand stamp, filling in blanks left by the original print. This will not authorize such use of a hand-stamp for any other purpose than as a description of the thing attached. It cannot be used to con vey information personal in its nature or dis connected from the thing to wh ehtbe matter so stamped is attached, except at rates for first-class matter. The width of the article of which a sample is given may be staled in writing, but when so written, the purpose of identification being hold to have been accom plished as authorized by the statute, the price of the article cannot be added, either in writ ing or imprint, without changing the classi fications of the matter to letter rates."
