We were not aware that our esteemed
townsman, G. 11. WOOD, the photographer,
was the patentee of a musical instrument,
but the following item from the Tunkhan
nock Republican , which is correct in every
other particular, would indicate that lie is:
Mr. James Vose, of Keiserville, purchased
a very fine Geo. 11. Wood organ of Messrs.
Struck Brothers, of Hornets Ferry, Brad
ford county, one day last week. These gen
tlemen are all practical musicians, are up
right and honorable and are deserving of the
confidence of the public. They have sold
quite a number of musical instruments in this
and adjoining counties in the past and at
present are doing a more lively business than
ever.
Our cotemporary might nave added that
the Messrs. STRUNK are agents for our well
known and reliable dealers, HOLMES & PAS
SAGE.
At a meeting of the teachers of Wilkes
Barre held on Saturday last the following
memorial to the late ALICE DOANK of Spring
field township, was adopted.
Two years ago Alice A. Doane was elected
teacher of an A primary grade, Franklin
Grammar School. She came amongst us a
stranger, but. in a few short months her
strong common sense, her evenly balanced
disposition won her the respect and love of
pupils and associates. Time hut fixed the
favorable first impressions and soon she es
tablished a reputation as an intelligent in
structor and far seeing dieiplinarinn.
She was born among the mountains of
Northern Pennsylvania. Iler parents coining
from the granite hills of the Connecticut Val
ley, were in direct descent from the Doane
who landed from the Mayflower December
21, 1020. She was educated at the State Nor
mal School, Mansfield, Pa., and at the age qf
twenty-two. thoroughly prepared, entered
the public schools of Williamsport, where she
taught acceptably for three years. Thence
she went to Corning, N. Y., remaining there
one year; afterwards, upon the warm person
nel recommendation of tlie lamented Prof. F.
A. Allen, she was employed by the third dis
t riet of this city.
By the Board and her Principal she was
regarded as one of the brightest ornaments
of our corps of teachers, circumspect in her
actions and conversations, skillful in teach
ing, and her pupils and patrons were fond of
her.
As an inmate friend she could lie trusted
without fear of misplaced confidence. As an
associate teachers she was one of our most
faithful co-laborers, ready to do all that she
could for the cause of education, and influ
encing her pupils to beernest, upright and
useful.
So firmly would she advocate the cause of
anv one she thought in the right, and so con
scientious was she in the observance of relig
ious duties, that, though not united with any
church, those with whom she daily associated
looken upon her as a Christain.
After a lingering illness of three months,
commencing with malarial fever, which de
veloped into a typhoid type, she peacefully
passed away, April, 18th, 1881. The same
sterling traits which marked her in health did
not depart from her in sickness, and weeks
before she died she expressed her confidence
in the Saviour's sustaining love and forgive
ness.
In her death, the seond of our number with
in two years, we recognize that one bv one
God is calling upon us to render an acc unt
of our training of immortal minds whom he
ent rusts to our teaching year hv year.
