Senator ROCKWELL of Troy has been a
member of the school board of that borough
for eighteen years, and yet he has no children
of his own to educate.
As predicted, Prof RYAN was yesterday
unanimously re-eleeted County Superintend
ent bv the convention of school directors —
an emphatic and unequivocal endorsement,
richly earned by three years of faithful, ef
fective labor for the good of the sohools of
the county. We prophesy that the action of
the convention will be repeated at the next
tri-enuial meeting. Mr. RYAN is emphatic
ally " the right man in tbe right place."
The Council met Monday evening but we
have not been furnished with the proceed
ings.

SCHOOL DIRECTOR'S CONVENTION. —The
tri-enuial convention of school direeters of
Bradford county for the purpose of electing
a County Superintendent of public schools
for the coming three year assembled in the
Court House yesterday. At o'clock. Supt.
RYAN called the convention to order. On
motion of J. B. HINDS. Dr. 0.11. ROCKWELL
of Monroeton was elected President. On
taking the chair the President made a very
neat and appropriate speech. C. W. REY
NOLDS of Pike, and J. F. BLOCIIER of Wya
lusing were elected secretaries on motion of
E. A. THOMSON.
On motion of Senator ROCKWELL of
Troy Borough, seconded by J. E. PIOLLKT of
Wysox, G. W. RYAN was nominated for
County Superintendent. On taking a ballot
one hundred and seventy one directors an
swered to the roll call, all of whom voted for
Mr. RYAN, and he wns declared unanimous
ly elected.
On motion of S. W. ALVORD, of Towanda,
the following resolution was unanimously
adopted.
/{evolved, By the School Directors of Bradford
County in Convention assembled, that we heartily
endorse the administration of l'rof. G. W. Ryan,
Superintendent of schools for the past three years;
his indfut'gable, efficient labors in elevating the
standard of education, advancing the interests of
the public school system and fitting teachers for
their high calling, challenge our admiration and de
mand our encouragement; his unanimous election
for a second term is only a fitting tribnte to his zeal
and snccess in the past; as directors we pledge him
eur united support in the future, and bespeak for

have any interest in the causa of
and the welfare of our youths.
Mr. RYAN being called for came forward
and addressed the convention for a few min
utes, thanking the directors for the expression
of their approval and confidence, invoking
their aid in his work for the coming term.
On motion the convention adjourned.

Mr. JOHN WARD, an old and esteemed
citizen of Towanda township, died early yes
terday morning of pheunionia, after an ill
ness of only a few days. The deceased was
the father of our well known citizen PHIL
ANDER L. WARD. Funeral ceremonies will
be observed at the lute residence ef Mr.
WARD, at 2 o'clock to-morrow afternoon.
The Bloomsburg A Sun is responsible for the
following: "If a man who has been drinking
for a number of years wants to kuovv what
effect it has on his system, let him stick a
small hollow tube about the size of a darning
needle into his flesh, and then hold a lighted
match to it, until the gas which passes out
from the tube ignites he will find that it
burns a blue blaze which will have a sulphur
ous odor."

cent., payable May 28th.
The amount of six per cents received
at the Treasury in Washington for con
tinuances is $52,575,000.
The republican senatorial caucus yes
terday resolved to proceed to the consid
eration of all uncontested nominations
forthwith.
The steamer purchased for the "Jeau
ette" search expedition will hereafter be
known as the Rodgers, in honor of Ad
miral llodgers.
The Mexican Minister at Washington
expresses gratification at the increasing
trade between the United States aud
Mexico, and thinks the extension of the
railroad system into Mexico will gaeatly
increase the prosperity of both countries.
A St. Petersburg dispatch says that the
Grand Duke Nicholas has beeu imprison
ed in a fortress in Daneburg. A very
affecting scene occurred when the mother
of the royal criminal took leave of him
forever.
