G. H. DRAKE, whose death was announc
ed in the REVIEW yesterday, came to Tow
anda about 1830 and commenced blacksmith
iug and wagon making. His shop was on
the lot now occupied by the M. E. Church.
After being burned out there is 1837 lie lo
cated at the corner of Main and Elizabeth
streets, where he continued to do business un
til he sold out to BRYANT A STULEN in 18G7,
after a successful and continuous busi
ness career of 37 years, and removed to
Montrose where he engaged in the mercan
tile businees with his son-in-law. Old age
and infirmities compelllcd him to retire from
the establishment on the first of January
last. Air. DRAKE was esteemed an honorable
busness man, a good citizen a consistent
christian, having been a worthy and devoted
member of the M. E. Church for many
years.
The planets Saturn and Jupiter were in
conjunction on Friday. When the two plan
ets appear again in the east before sunrise,
they will be transposed and Saturn will rise
first. Still they will linger quite near each
other for some time, finally to part company
entirely. Jupiter will press on, leaving his
companion whirling alone on .his long track.
The astrologers, of whom there are still a
few, predict dire calamities from this con
junction. The calamitities are not to come
so much from the conjunction itself as it
does from the fact tnat it occurs in the sign
of Taurus. The last time a conjunction of
these planets occurred in Taurus was in 1140
a year of horrors. It was the year of the
crusade, in which 200,000 combatants were
slain. The London dealers in astrology, who
prepare what is called "Zadkiel's Almanac,"
have prepared a program of horrors for the
old world to outdo those of 1140. The
crash is just at hand, and marvelous is the
sale of Zadkiel's almanacs among the ignor
ant credulous.
