Mr. and Mrs. PHILIP GORI of New York
have been visiting Mrs. G's mother in Wy

President Fox of the Citizens National
Bank, and wife returned from Philadelphia
yesterday morning.
Lawyer FOYLE has returned from Mont
rose where he had been attending court as
counsel in an important case.
G. MORTIMER LEWIS, a conspicuous young
member of the Wilkesßarre bar, was in Tow
anda yesterday on legal business.
Mrs. BURNS left for Washington on Thurs
day. having been invited to visit the capuol
by the famous American sculptress, VINNIE
REAM.
Mrs. ROSA MCNULTY of this place and Mr.
CONNOR, a Say re machinist, were married
on Wednesday evening and are away 011 a
wedding trip.
G. S. ACKLKY'S only child, a bright little
boy of four years, was reported very ill last
evening, with only the faintest hope of his
recovery.
There will Le a special yioeting of the Land
League this evening. The public are invited.

Mercer county has contracted for a
$05,000 almshouse.
A railroad is to be built from Strouds
burg to the Wind Gap.
In many parts of Lehigh county there
have been a uumper of incendiary fires.
Tne Jews of Altooua are sanguine 'of
being able to build a synagogue at that
place.
A decision lias been rendered that the
International Bank of Chicago is liable
for taxes amounting to $37,000.
The steamers St. Laurent and Gellert,
which arrived al New York from Europe
Thursday, brought $1,000,000 iu gold.
Sophie Pieoftsky, the young woman
hung in St. Petersburg for complicity in
the assassination of the czar, was pretty
and refined in appearance and well edu
cated. She has a near relative who is
aid-de-camp to the Grand Duke Alexis.
The report of ex-Senator Osborn on
the Presidential and Congressional elec
tion in Florida last fall, has been publish
ed. The Republican Senators have sus
tained many of the charges of fraud and
violence, and alleges that the State was
dishonestly carried by the Democrats. .
The memorial committee of the Grand
Army of the Republic in New York are
making arrangements for Decoration
Day. The Indications are that the pa
rade will surpass any previous year, and
will comprise 30,000 men. A large num
ber of letters have been received from all
parts of the State asking to be assigned
positions in the line.

The Board of Naval Officers recom
mend that the relief steamer start in
search of the Jeannette about June Ist,
and arrive at Herald Island the middle of
August. The Board details the course
which the relief expedition should
take, state that the steamer bought
by the Government is strong and
fast, and express the belief that the Jean
nette should be considered safe until
news of a disaster is received.
