H. MCCUI.LT, Esq., the elocu
tionist and impersonator, of Philadelphia, is
visiting in this place, and will give on Friday
evening a Reading at Mereur Hall, under the
auspices of the ladies of Christ Church. The
follow ing notices will give an idea of Mr.
McC.'s ability and attractiveness as a reader:
H. V. McCully, Esq.,
Dear Sir: 1 congratulate you on your
success in all your Readings in the different
departments of Tragedy and Mirth. Let me
say that I consider your renderings of the
works of Charles Dickens as exceeding any
reading from that writer I have ever heard.
T. DKWITT TALMAGE.
He is one of the best readers and declaim
ed in the nation. In reading the humerous
creations of Dickcus I think lie has no equal.
A. A. WLLLITS, D. D.
Ills range of ability is very great, and his
skill in personification remarkable. I regard
him as rarely gifted, and having few equals
in his line. T. S. ARTHUR.
Among the various elocutionists who have
appeared in Philadelphis, there is none that
so fully realize our idea of what a finished
reader should be than our talented townsman
11. V. McCully, Esq. In voice, gesture, em
phasis and the other qualities that constitute
an elocutionist par excellence, Mr. McCully
stands pre-eminent; and his efforts are in the
highest sense enjoyable.— Philadelphia In
quirer.
Mr. McCully ranks among our best elocu
tionists, having a clear rich voice, a very dis
tinct prououueiation, and uncommon power
of personation.— Bucks County Intelligen
cer.
He is just returning from a reading tour in
Ohio. The following notices relate to the
readings in Urbana:—
Mr. 11. Vansant McCully has given two en
tertainments in this city to large and delight
ed audiences. Having heard • most of the
great elocutionists and public readers of this
country, I have no hesitation in saying that
so far as I am capable of judging, Mr. McCul
ly has no superior and very few equals. He
will always give entire satisfaction.
J. F. MARLAY.
Pastor First M. E. Church.
Mr. 11. V. McCully has delighted and en
tertained his audiences in this city with his
readings and recitations. He is certainly
possessed of a high order of ability and cul
ture as an elocutionist, llis renderings of
the humorous and pathetic I have never
heard equaled. DUNCAN MUDONAMD.
Attorney of Champaign County.
We are also permittted to refer to Mrs. C.
H. Darlington, who speaks in high terms of
Mr. McCully.
