The New Second Assistant Postmaster
General.
While the appointment of Mr. lv. AL
LISON ELMF.K, of Waverly to the respon
sible and honorable position of Second
Assistant Postmaster General, is one of
the very best that could have been made,
his selection is a refutation of the news
paper allegation that there is bitter en
mity between the New York Senators
and President GAKLIEI.D. Mr. ELMKK is
one of the most intimate friends and
ardent supporters of Senator PLATT and
without doubt his appointment was made
at the instance of that Senator. Mr.
PLATT possesses the rare quality among
pofiticians at least, of remembering and
rewarding his friends. In this respect
as in many others he resembles Gen.
CAMERON of this State. Such men are
deservedly popular. We confidently pre
dict that THOMAS C. PLATT will make one
of the very best Senators the Empire
State has ever had, and that his ability
and usefulness will give him a national
reputation, while the many noble traits
of head and heart will always find for him
a warm place in the hearts of those who
have the honor to know him personally.
The Elmira Advertiser gives Mr. ELMER
this enthusiastic endorsement:
Hon. Richard Allison Eltner, of Waver
ly, was yesterday nominated for Second
Assistant Postmaster General by the
President. While Mr. Elmer has ever
been foremost in the advancement of his
party, this is the first political position
with which he has been honored, though
frequently named for official stations. Me
was very prominently urged, for which
the Advertiser heartily sustained him, for
State Treasurer, and only gave way to
the demand of other sections. Mr. El
mer was born in Orange county in this
State in 1842, and in 1850, with his par
ents removed to Waverly. In 1800 he
entered Hamilton College and graduated
in 1804. Since that time he has been act
ively engaged in business at Waverly,
and is cashier of the First National Bank.
Later he has been interested in the large
railway enterprises centering in Waverly
and in the extensive real estate operations
in and about the. new village of Sayre.
He is a hard working Republican in the
ranks, and has never sought office. The
present appointment was entirely unso
licited and unexpected. He enjoys a very
large circle of acquaintances throughout
this section of the State. No better
nomination could be made for the place.
A great Polar watering place is among
the possibilitic s of the future. The Ca
nadians are about In Ming a railroad, the
Hyperborean Pacific., f oru Lake Winnc
peg to Fort Churchill on Hudson's Bay,
a distance of three hundred and fifty
miles. The route wa, < lured last sum
mer and pronounced t isi le. The cost
is estimated at $12,000 p< r mile, it
could not be operated more than live
months of a year, but in that period, great
quantities of grain could be taken from
the Red River country to a port on the
Hudson's Bay, tlience to be taken in
steamships direct to Great Britain with
out breaking bulk, thus saving largely in
transportation charges. This considera
tion will influence the building of the
railroad more than the fact that it might
be a conveyance to a summer watering
place of the coolest possible conditions.
Gladstone has written the following
note to Rovvton : " 1 learned of the de
cease of Bcacousfleld with sad surprise
and shall be prepared to give directions
for a public funeral." Sir Nathaniel
Rothchild, on behalf of his executors re
plied, thanking Gladstone, stating that
Beaconsfield's will directed that lie be
buried at Hughenden, by the side of his
wife.
The President has nominated Harrison
Adreen for Postmaster of Baltimore.
The schooner, Leslie, from the South
Seas, reports that Captain Schwartz land
ed on the Solomon Group to trade, was
surrounded by natives and tomahawked,
The savages rushed for the boat but the
crew reached it first and pushed off.
They also report that the captain of the
Black Hawk was murdered bj' natives.
It is doubtful if over twenty millions
of the outstanding sixes will be present
ed to the Treasury for redemption. Ten
millions of the new stamped 3 2 s were is
sued Wednesday.
