Mosel brought $857,000 in gold to New
York.
Jane Buehler, who was reported to be
114 years of age, died at Pottsville on
Thursday.
General James B. Weaver, the Green
backer, has forty appointments to speak
in this State.
William Park, of Audenried, Luzerne
county, is 77 years of age, and works
daily in the mines.
A couple of disreputable females were
tarred and feathered at Ilazelton, Indi
ana, on Friday night.
In this State last year $9,000,000 were
spent for education, while $90,000,000
were spent for liquor.
The Pottsville Iron and Steel Com
pany's rolling mill is turning out 3(>00
tons of rails per month. •
James Burns, of Erie, this state, para
letic for 18 years, claims to have been re
stored to health through Father Malon
ey's prayers.
By a blunder in the act the anti-treat
ing law of Wisconsin has been pronounced
inoperative by the courts.
The democracy of Arkansas is threat
ened with a division on tiic question of j
paying the State debt. The element of
the party favoring repudatiou is out in an
address to the people, and intends, it is
said, to run a separate ticket for State
ofliccs.
Judge Brady, Thurlow Weed, Alger
non Sullivan and other prominent gentle
men have joined the Poe Memorial Execu
tive Committee, and a card will be pub

In 1879 the Citizens' Reform Associa

Colonel E. A. L. Roberts, the torpedo

They were living with their mother, who
separated from the father some years

At a meeting on Saturday of the Presi
dents of the trunk lines and representa
tives of principal Western roads, forming
a majority of the Joint Executive Com
mittee, it was decided that, as the tariff
of April Ist was established for the Sum
mer season, and the reduction of April
i Ith was only made to meet special rates
which have since been withdrawn, it was
resolved that commencing April 18th the
tariff of April Ist be restored and the
eighth class be made thirty cents.
According to the Rath (Me.) Times, a
good deal of woodchopping has been done
during the past winter in that State on
acconut of the depredations of a certain
kind of worm, which had killed large
tracts of spruce, hemlock and fir, leaving
the trees as dead as if fire had passed
among them. These pests have only
shown themselver within a year or two,
before which they were utterly unheard
of by any one now living; but it now
seems as if the forests of the principal
evergreens were doomed, as in all direct
ions throughout the State the same work
of distraction is evident.
