Few communities can boast more fine look
ing and valuable farm horses than can be
found in the country surrounding this place.
Our streets were lined on Saturday with
teams most of which would have done credit
to the celebrated horse districts of France.
In commenting on the recent sale of the
property at Cape May Point which was fitted
up a few years ago by the Presbyterians as
a religious summer resort, the New York
Times remarks:—"The chief reason why
Presbyterians cannot form successful seaside
associations is, however, the unquestionable
fact that Presbytenanism is a mountainous,
or at all events au inland faith. Born among
the Waldeusian hill tribes, it reached its most
vigorous growth among the Swiss mountains
•nd in the rugged fastnesses of Scotland.—
Congregationalism, which is merely Presbv
terianism passed through a coarse sieve and
with less coherence among its particles,
iourishes only in the inland and hilly parts of
New England, and has been unable to keep
its bold on Boston and the seaport towns.—
In this country the true Scotch Presbyterian
ism of the grim covenanting type is found al
most exclusively among the Allegheny Moun
tains and Preabyterianism of every kind lias
gradually receded from the coast line, and
.flourishes to any marked degree only in the
interior of the country. It may be regarded
s an established fact that an altitude of 800
feet above the sea is the lowest limit of the
*oneof Presbyteriauism, and ihat it does not
grow with real vigor below the altitude of
1000 feet. We can thus readily see why it is
unwise and almost impossible to establish a
Presbyterian seaside esort. We might as
well expect the mountain asli to flourish in
the sand of the sea beach. Methodism,
which lias never flourished at any great
height above the sea is essentially a sea-coast
faith, and is perfectly at home at Ocean
Grove or anywhere within sound of the
surf."
