PAAS. — To-morrow is Easter, commonly
called in this country, Paas. The custom
which has prevailed from time immemorial
of feasting on eggs on Easter day is still
maintained, and the demand for eggs will be
large to-day. An exchange says: "The latest
novelty for home and party amusement are
egg sociables. The eggs for decorating are
previously "blown" by piercing each end with
a bodkin. After the contents have thus been
extracted, they are thoroughly washed, and
are then ready for the painter or artist's hand.
Young ladies can also make very pretty orna
ments, if they will see that the eggs used by
the family are broken only at one end. The
edges of the hole are then cut neatly off with
a pair of sharp scissors, and little bits of satin
or silk glued around the edge, and gathered
at the top with a cord and tassels. These can
be used for holding gloves, boubous, tiny
bouquets, little dolls and such trifles, and at
public sociables may be sold. The fun comes
in when the egg bags are opened and the con
tents shown.
The Blossburg Industrial llegister gives
an account of an outrage committed in that
place, almost too revolting for publication,
the victim being a resident of this county:
On Monday night that low groggery kept
by one Dave Mitchell, was the scene of an
alleged rape. This Mitchell, it seems, is con
tinually breaking the law, selling liquor with
out license and to minors; keeping the vilest
den that ever disgraced Blossburg; women
are continually insulted when passing this
place and it is a pity and disgrace that such a
bole is allowed to go unmolested. His place
is in prison. If these two men are guilty,
why not the keeper of this vile den, for al
lowing such a thing in his house?
The facts in the case as sworn to are these:
The husband of the plaintiff, Thomas by
uiamo. goes about varnishing furniture, and
on Monday got beastly drunk and went to
Mitchell's where he made some disturbance.
Mitchell sent for Mr. Thomas's wife to come
and take him home; she went there and found
him too drunk to walk, and she, with help of
another woman, got her husband up stairs,
where she swears the defendant Patrick
Mooney, assisted by Edward Blake, both from
Morris Run, committed a rape on her person.
Mooney was held at SI,OOO bail for court, and
Blake at S3OO, for assault and battery with
attempt to commit rape. The plaintiff, Mrs.
Thomas, is a modest appearing woman, giv
ing her testimony with great reluctance. She
does not sepui overly bright, and is a bashful
country woman. She resides near Alba. The
case certainly IOOKS bad for the boys at pres
ent. Mooney heard the evidence without
flinching, but Blake was very nervous, seem
ing to consider his position keenly. These
two men previous to this always bore a good
reputation and are very respectably connect
ed. We can see no reason for not prosecuting
Mitchell as accessorry to the crime. Since
the above was put in type we learn that Blake
has lied for parts unknown.
