LAMKNT. who has hut just removed from this place to East Troy, has been elected superintendent of a Sunday-school there. A committee of the Pennsylvania legisla ture visited the Elmira Reformatory yester day. Senator DAVIES is a member of the committee. Cupt. G. V. MTKR, through whose agency THEODORE BROWN secured his pension, in forms us that the amount is $8 instead of sl4 as stated the other day. Rev. G. F. and Mrs. ROSENMULLER, of Sayre, had their cup of happiness replenished yesterday morning by the aflvent of a ten pound baby—a precious little girl. G. V. MYKR has received an order admit ting the little CnAPMAN boy, who lost A leg by being run over by the ears a year or so since, to the Soldiers' Orphan School at Mans field. Rev. DAVID CRAFT of Wyalusing has been invited by President CATTELL of Lafayette College, to preach the commencement before the Christian Brotherhood of the Brainard Society of that institution in June next. GOOD APPOINTMENT.— Under the law pro viding for a board of examiners of mine in spectors, Judge MORROW has just appointed JOHN DITCH BURN, of Barclay, a member of •aid board. Mr. D. is a practical miner, and a very intelligent gentleman. Our venerable friend and valued subscriber Mr. IRA P. BALLARD, who has resided in this place for the past year witli his son-in-law, D. A. LAMENT, has returned to his farm in Troy township. lie is a genial gentleman and will be missed by his many friends here. This is Good Friday. There was a large flock of wild ducks in the river Wednesday, and many were the shots fired at them. 4 Maple sugar and syrup were quite plenty in this market yesterday, and were sefling at reasonable prices. Mrs. THEODORE MANLEY of Smitbfield died Wednesday, and wiil be buried at 10 o'clock this morning. A quick-sand bank rewarded their labors. The boys arc now satisfied that they got the wrong place. WILLIAM J. MADGER died at his residence in North Towanda Wednesday afternoon, aged about 57 years. He was an old resident of the town and a much respected citizen. The high appreciation of his fellow-citizens was evidenced in the confidence they reposed in him, by electing him to the most responsi ble position in the township for thirty consec utive years. The remains will be buried on Sunday in Ulster. WOMEN'S MISSIONARY SOCIETY.— The an nual meeting of the Towanda District of the Women's Foreign Missions Society, Presbyte ry of Lackawanna, was held in this place yesterday. Delegates and guests were pres ent from Athens, Barclay, Canton, Mon roeton, Stevensvilie, Savre, Towanda, Troy, Wyalusing and Waverly. Miss I.ORING, President of the Lackawanna Presbyterial Society, and Mrs. Doctor KNOX, of Elnaira, were present. At 9:30 a. m. a devotional meeting was held, led by Mrs. KNOX, and at 10 o'clock the meeting was called to order for business. After singing the doxoiogy and prayer the routine business was transacted, followed by addresses by Miss LORING and Mrs. KNOX, an essay by Miss COOK, and sing ing by Mrs. BALDWIN. The session was closed by repeating the Lord's prayer in con cert. An elegant lunch prepared by the Towan da members was spread in the church parlors and after partaking the members were again called to order and enjoyed a pleasant and profitable afternoon session in listening to the president's address, a talk on Japan, by Mrs. KNOX, an address to the " bands" by Miss IAIRING, reports from auxiliaries and com mittee, singing by Mrs. BALDWIN, etc. About 350 ladies were present. In the evening Rev. A. L. OSTRAXDSR of Owego delivered a very interesting lecture discriptive of what he saw in Turkey. By way of illustration, a number of young gen tlemen arrayed in oriental costumes were in troduced to afford a better idea of the man ners and customs of Constantinople. We re gret that we are unable to do the lecturer jus tice by giving a synopsis of his admirable ad dress, which was listened to witli wrapt at tention to the close by the entire audience. — At qHite a late the meeting was brought to a close, after a few appropriate remarks by Doctor STEWART, by the congregation ris ing and singing that grand old missionary hymn, " From Greenland's icy mountains." The report of the secretary of the Society shows a membership of 282 and contributions amounting to SG2I 53. The church was bevutifully aud artistically decorated with dried grasses, which were greatly admired by all. This was the work of Miss HELEN CARTER. There have been 1,014 horses shipped by railway from Montreal to tfrej States the past month. Ohio Democrats arc a good deal disap pointed because Governor Foster of Ohio won't go abroad. They want him out of the way iu October. A Loudon dispatch says the steamer ,James Harris, an English coaster, was sunk in a collission last night and four teen persons drowned. All the Nihilists concerned in the assas sination of the Czar, except llessy Helf raann, will be hanged to-day. RussakofT and Michaelotf have sued the Czar for mercy. A number of Nihiiists attacked the sol diers who were keeping guard over the condemned assassius of the Czar, and twenty of them were arrested with bombs in their possession. Sergeant Bates, who inarched through the Southern States aud some parts of Europe, bearing the American flag, is dy ing at Say brook, 111., in abject poverty. He has a wife and six children. Governor Ordway, of Dakota, was in Washington yesterday, and called upon the President and Secretary Lincoln to urge the importance of immediate assis tance to the citizens of Dakota, who have been rendered homeless by the recent dis astrous lioods. lie wants government rations issued. It is said that a powerful syndicate of bankers is forming to buy up all the six es in the market, to get the benefit of the probable rise in price, believing that they can secure nearly all the bonds not al ready controlled by the banks before May 10th.
