The I>ailv Review, Towanda, Pa., Tuesday, April 12, 881. ■ IVORS. a. W. ALVORD. NOBLE N. ALVORD. As Hon. T. C. PLATT, the new U. S. Senator from New York is so near to us, we feel an interest in his personal and political welfare, because we know him to be worthy, and we copy the following notice from the Binghaniton Republican with real pride: The friends of the Hon. Thomas C. Platt have reason to feel • proud of the prompt recognition his ability and worth received in the reorgan ization of the Senate Committees. It 6eldom falls to the lot of a new Senator to be so highly honored, especially when coming directly from business pursuits, lis is sixth on the Finance Committee, third on Postofflces, fourth on Transpor tation Routes to the Seaboard and first on the joint Committee on Enrolled Bills. In view of recent and prospective legis lation the Finance Committee is one of most important Committees of the Sen ate; and it is assuring as well as gratify ing to know that it is composed in the main of men whose views are not tinc tured with the financial heresies of the day. The Committee on Postofflces and Post-roads is also one of importance, and it is eminently fitting that upon it the new Postmaster General should have a repre sentative from his own State. These and the other positions accorded to Mr. Platt are not only a high tribute to his ability and integrity, but they betoken a purpose on the pijirt of the Republicans of the Seuatc to secure the services of the best men in the most responsible position. This is shown all through the reorganiza tion of the Senate Committee. The Chicago Times of Saturday morn ingsays: "The Times to morrow will say : The excitement and jump in pork to-day was the result of a developement of a stroug corner in that product, con trolled by Peter McGcogh, of Milwaukee, backed by the Millions of Alexander Mitchell. There are .less than 200,000 barrels of pork in Chicago, and the amount outside of the city is small. It is reported McGeogh controls this 200,000 and has bought 800,000 barrels options running up to and including June. A diversity of opinion exists as to Armours relations to the present corner, but there has been a fight between him and Mc- Geogh. It is predicted that the price of pork will run up as high as S2O. Parties familiar with the pork business say the supply this season is likely to fall short of last by reason of the hard wiuter which killed off a large number of hogs, while it has left the survivors in poorer con dition than they were last spring. Infor mation from different sources says the Immediate cause of the advance was a private dispatch, said to be from a high official source in Paris, that the French Government had decided to rescind the prohibitory decree, but it is said the real and lasting cause of the extraordinary rise, amounting to from ninety cents to a dollar in pork, and fron fifteen cents to tweuty cents in lard, is the strong hand of the Armours, who have secured May options, and are reaching out after the June and July futures. Their purpose is •aid to be to squeeze the shorts as heav ily as the conditions of trade and the rules of the Board permits." IMPORTANT TO TEACHERS. — The Pitts burg Telegraph says: "Dr. Iligbee, the new State Suderintendeat of Public lu •tructiou, is calling in the teacheas cer tificates, and will compel them to under go a re-examiuation before they can take out new ones* Over one half the teachers employed in Pittsburg hold such certifi cates from the State, which license the holder to teachAn any part of Pennsylva nia.
