At a meeting of ttie faculty of Lehigh Uni versity held March 21st. 1881. the following record was directed to be spread upon the minutes: The faculty have received with heartfelt sorrow the sad intelligence of the ilea h of Charles Waller Abbott of the senior class, and hasten to tender their heartfelt sympathy and condolence to his parents and family. An excellent student of more than ordinary gifts, lie was exenfplarv in deportment, and worked faithfully to acquire the knowledge which should fit him tor future professional life upon which, to all human foresight, lie was so soon to enter. Intelligent, truthful, frank and manly, he was highly esteemed by his classmates and fellow-students, who will sadly miss him from among them. There remains to cheer those from whom he has been thus early taken, the reasonable religious and holy hope that a merciful God has removed him to a happy and eternal home. R. A. LAMBERTON,PITS. MANSFIELD MERRIMAN, Sec'y. The " Benefit" at the parlors of the Metho dist church on Wednesday evening was a complete success. The tables were spread at f> o'clock. Coffee, sandwiches and cake were served by charming waiters to the attendants till half-past seven. At that time the sump tuous tables were left for a richer musical and oratorical feast. Declamations were spoken by Mr. W. S MACE, Mr. W. V. DUGGAN, Mr. A. F. BRONSON and Miss IIILA HUNTLEY favored the audience by reciting the " Paint er of Seville." Mr. MACE has a clear voice, flue articblation and an easy, graceful man ner. He always pleases his audience. Mr. JLUGGAN, who carried off the first prize at the contest in Mercur Hall last Friday even ing, has a strong, melodious voice, a fine pres ence, an almost perfect enunciation and just Welsh enough in his speech to make him a very interesting and forcible speaker. Mr. Bronson, though suffering from a severe cold, spoke his declamation, " The Flag," with great earnestness and animation. He has to contend with one or two natural de fects ami when these are overcome lit; will make a fine speaker. Miss HUNTLEY has a clear though not a strong voice. Iler in flec tions are excellent. Iler manner is pleasing and her rendering of the " Painter of Seville" was interesting. The musical part of the entertainment was most excellent. The song "The Violets" was sung beautifully by Mrs. BALDWIN and Miss SKKLEY, with Mrs. SHAUT accompanist. The duet "When I Know that thou art Near Me,' by Miss LOTTIE KKELER and Mr. MACE was highly entertaining. The duet "How dear to Me the Hour," by Mrs. 11. MERCUR and Miss KKELER could not have been more appreciat ed. The song and chorus " I'se gwine back to Dixie," by Mrs. BALDWIN, Miss SKKLEY and Mrs. TURNER was sweetly pathetic and thrilled all present with delight. At the conclusion of these exercises ice cream and cake were served to a large num ber who were anxious to help the good work. One feature of the entertainment was especi ally pleasing and commendable, and that was to see the people of the different congrega tions taking hold as a unit, and working with a will for a worthy cause.
