Tlie l>ailv Review. Towanda, Pa M Friday, April 8, 1881. KOITORS . B. W. ALVORD. NOBLE N. ALVORD. ** Daily Review?' only SIS cent* per month. Try it. A Noble Sentiment. In his speech at the birthday dinDer given to General CAMERON, in Cuba the other day that "noblest Roman of them all" said : " A man who makes 110 ene mies is never a postive force. I began life with the determination to succeed, with what result others must judge. I have made it a rule of life to be kind to every one and considerate of all. Yet I have made enemies, because I have had opinions and asserted them. But this has bronght me friends also, and where ever I go, at home or abroad, the grate ful evidences of their regard greet me. I have lived long and seen much of life, and when I am gone all I ask is that pco p'e can say that l did thebcst I could and was ever true to my obligations and my friends." All who know General CAMERON well will corroberate his statement. Strict fidelity to his friends has been the secret of his great success through a long and exceptionally useful and busy life. The Chinamen from Peru in San Fran cisco, give a sickening account of the suffering of their contrymen during the war and since the cessation of hostilities. At the Chinese quarters in Lima over eighty Chinese merchants were killed and upward of $1,000,000 wortli of property destroyed. Since the close of the war large numbers of coolies have been mur dered. Leading men have appealed to the foreign representatives for protection. It is expected the English Minister will take the matter in hand, should the Chi nese government not send a represent a .tive to look after the interests of its sub jects. The islands of the Grecian archipelago seem the favorites of earthquakes. Scio, which sustained the last, is separated by a narrow strait from the mainland, about four miles across at the narrowest. It contains fifty thousand people and a prin cipal city or capital of fourteen thousand inhabitants. Its chief productions are the olive, the grape and wool. Chian wine was an ancient article of commerce. The people are thrifty and industrious. It is conjectured that these outbreaks at Ischia and Scio, which was more destruc tive, hearld an approaching eruption of Vesuvius. It is by no means certain that Presi dent Garfield would care to "make or break" with the Senate upon Judge Rob ertson's nomination. One of his friends doubtless put it about right the other day when he said : "Mr. Garfield made this appointment witli a view of representing an important'element in the Republican party in New York, but he would not break his heart if it .were rejected. lie lias made the nomination and leaves the responsibility of the rest to the Senate. There Robertson will have to stand or fall upon his own merits " Occasional shocks of an earthquake are still felt at Scio, Asiatic Turkey. All open spaces in the town are filled with the wounded, many of whom are in a hgpcless condition. Numerous dead and wounded are still under the ruins. The survivors are emigrating in all directions. There are far more victims of damages in the villages than in the larger towns. Supplies arrive daily, but are insufficient to cope with the destitute. The crew of the French man-of-war rendered valuable assistance. Two hundred more Sioux are coming to Buford, Dakota, to surrender. Sitting Bull sends word that he will go there to surrender as soon as the ground is suf ficiently dry to make traveling good. Business Cards.
