HORN BROOK ITEMS. —A very enjoyable Sunday-school concert was held in the M. E. Church Sunday evening. The attendance was good, and all were well pleased. G. L. Ilor ton is a good superintendent for the school. There are three hundred and eighteen mem bers of Sunday-schools on the ch; trge. Five thousand five hundred dollars have been raised for church purposes on Horn brook circuit within the two years past. One hundred and twelve persons have been bap tized by their pastor in tiic sauie time. Rev. J. B. Davis of Nanticoke, Pa., will preach in the Hornbrook church next Sunday, II o'clock A. M., and also in the evening. The I. (). of G. TVs meet every Tuesday evening. The order is in a flourishing con dition. The good prospectof temperance legislation at Ilarrisburg now is encouraging. It is somewhat late in the day to give a re port of tin; declamation contest which took place in Mercur Hall last Friday evening, but the following from the Elmira Free Press is the only account we have seen: The second annual prize contest in decla mation held by the students of the Susque hanna College Institute, took place at Mercur Hall,Towanda, Friday evening, April 1. The thirteen young men taking part showed a great deal of natural ability and much culture. A great deal of the culture shown by the young men may be attributed to the drill they have had from Prof. J. D. Bigelow, a gradu ate of Hamilton College, one of the best United States schools of oratory. The names* of the contesting students were E.S. ltundell, Burlington; Luther Whitney, Wysox; Harry P. Corser, Towanda; John M. Kellogg, Mon roeton; Albert F. Bronson, Sayre; Wm. E. Lane, Towanda; Herman F. Lee, Steyens villi-; Herbert S. Putnam. Granville; James F. Murdoch, Ulster; M.E. Bowman,Towanda; Geo. E. Beers, Towanda; William V. Dug gun, Barclay; Kent M. Bull, East Towanda. Prof. 11.11. HiHton of Waverly high school, Prof. W. 11. Benedict of Athens graded school, and S. W. Buck composed the commit tee of award. W. V. Duggan, for his brilliant rendering of the "Fall of Pemberton Mill," received the first prize—a finely bound set of Maeauley's History of England. The second prize was awarded to Herman F. Lee whose spirited recital of "The Battle of Malvern Hill" called out much applause. Harry P. Corser and E. S. Kuudcll also deserve special mention. The speaking was interspersed with vocal music by William Mace, John Turner, Miss Julia Seeley and Miss Anna Thomas, and two very tine instrumental solos by Misses Lillie Stewart and Freddie Fox. The reporter wiio furnished the above ne glected to notice the fact that Mr. GEORGE BEERS of this place, was honorably mention ed tor his declamation. Monroe. Two boys, sons of Darius Bullock, who were at the State institution for soldier's children at Mansfield, in Tioga county, con cluded to take a vacation to themselves and see how tilings were moving off at home. Willie and Clinton are aged about twelve and fourteen respectively, and on Sunday morn ing they left the institution behind them, and made some thirty miles towards mother, pan try, and cake basket. The remaining six miles was easily accomplished on Monday morning, and by nine o'clock they put in an appearance. 1 think that a few days around home's hearthstone will enable them to flesh up, and then return to duty again at Mansfield. I don't believe that they will walk back as cheerfully as they came. Old Mrs. Sweatland was buried yesterday, the 4th instant, after having outlived four or five husbands, and reaching the great age of eighty-six years. She leaves quite a property mostly in money and bonds, and obligations. She was more than enough for the greatest sharpers that ever settled in Monroe, com pelling them to pay up, under judicial rulings. She professed to have experienced religion some months since. In winter matters we are having the appen dix, with the thermometer at fifteen degrees above zero. Enough, enough! I give it up. Lloyd Rockwell's oldest son, who is sick with scarlet fever, is improving at last accounts. Ail wish a speedy recovery. I know of no other cases now prevailing here abouts. N.
