Mrs. ED. WILLIAMS has beeu sick for sev
eral weeks.
Dr. It. 11. ELY of Eaeeyville was in To
wanda yesterday.
Dr. IIORTON of Terrvtown was registered
at the Ward House yesterday.
Major HALE of "Woodside" is serving his
country as a juror this week.
I?. S. BKNTLY. jr., of Williamsport, is in
attendance at court here this week.
Rev. DAVID CRAFT, who is always a wel
come visitor, made us a brief call yesterday.
G. 11. WELLES of Wyalusing, has added to
his herd by purchase, three short horn cattle
of superior breeding.
HARRY MADILL is confined to the house
with a painful attack of the rheumatism .from
which he has been suffering for several weeks.
President WILEY, of the Water Works,
who has been in New Mexico, where he has
an extensive contract, during the past winter,
is in town.
Dr. ELLIS, who spent last summer here as
Man ager of Appleton's Cyclopedia, has re
turned and will make Towauda his headquar
ters again this season.
BILL LKIC is an expert in putting down car
pets*cleaning windows and such work, and
his prices arc moderate. People who have
work of that kind to do will do well to em
ploy him.
JOHN HOLDRKN, a good blacksmith, of
Corning, N. Y.. has taken W. B. DODGE'S
shop, on Park street, which has been occu
pied by the water works for the past year,
and the ring of the anvil is again heard thers
as in days of yore when "old Monrue was
young."
MOINTYRE & SPENCER, who have won a
good reputation as builders of ljrst-elass
wagons, propose to maintain their good
name. They have just succeeded in securing
the services of B. 11. CARPENTER, of Groton,
N. Y.. one of the most accomplished painters
and decorators in the country.
Mrs. L. 11. SCOTT has been quite sick for
the past few days. While attending the
meeting of the Ladies' Missionary Society 0.1
Saturday afternoon, she was seized with diz
ziness in the head, and very soon her symp
toms became quite alarming. She is much
better now.
Prof. J. S. CRAWFORD was in town yester
day, en route to New York, from where lie
will embark for California, where he is to en
gage in teaching, having made arrangements
to take an interest in a private educational
institution, situated at Red Bluffs, in the Sac
ramento Valley. Mr. CRAWFORD is one of
the very best teachers in the county,—which
is saying a good deal,—and his loss wit! be
deeply regretted by all interested in the cause
of education. In common with hosts of other
friends we wish him a boil voyage, and the
greatest success in his new enterprise.

LEROY C'ORBIN nas taken Ross' first ward
grocery store. He is a wide-awake, enter
prising man and will undoubtedly do a large
business.
M. C. Wells, the White Sewing Machine
agent has removed his office from the Music
store to Wood & Co.'s Gallery, third story
Patton's block.
E. C. SHAW was installed as N. G. of Brad

We are authorized by the county commis
sioners to say to the overseers of the poor in
the several townships and boroughs, that the
poor house will be ready to receive inmates
011 Monday, the 18th of April, 1881.
Ex-commissioner SN ELL'S only son, a boy
aged ten years, died last evening, after a long
illness. The immediate cause of the death
was organic disease of the heart. The death
is a sad bereavement to the fond parents.
Mrs. MCDONALD, mother of Congressman
RYAN of Topeka, Ivan., died at her home in
Franklin Tuesday liigut. Two daughters
summoned from Chicago reached the house a
few minutes after their mother had passed
awar.
The citizens of Waverly have issued a very
neatly executed invitation to the opening of
the Tioga Hotel in that place, to come off on
Wednesday evening next. The committee
issuing the invitation represent the best
classes of Waverly's good people.
Watkins Post No. 68, G.A.R., will celebrate
the 16th anniversary of Lee's surrender, on
Saturday evening next, April 9th, at their
rooms. Itcv. C. T. Ilallowell will deliver an
address. Refreshments will he served. Mem
bers of the press and all honorably discharged
soldiers and sailors are cordially invited to be
present.
If any person who happens to know WM.
HUNTER, supposed to be living somewhere
near Towanda, and whose wife died a short
time since, will notify him that his sister from
Minneapolis is here looking for him, they
will confer a favor on a lady in great distress.
Any information in regard to the whereabouts
of the gentleman may be sent to this office.
The Towanda branch of the Rochester Mu
tual Aid Society, held its annual meeting
Tuesday evening. The following officers
were chosen for the ensuing year:

L. F. GARDNER WHS chosen delegate to the
annual meeting in Rochester to be held in
Mav.

Beaconsfleld's condition shows no
change for the better.
The Newark, N. J., trunkinakers have
struck for higher wages.
In the state ejection in Michigan the
Republican ticket was successful.
There is a severe snowstorm North
western Ontario and the roads are im
passable.
The board of Aldermen of New York
will look into oleomargarine and see if it
is detrimental to health.
John T. Rich, republican, has been
elected to congress from the seventh
Michigan district, to succeed Conger,
elected to the senate.
A company has been formed, with a
capital of $30,000,000, and a charter ob
tained, to build a ship canal across Flori
da. The work will commence immediate
ly.
Prominent lawyers in New York ques
tion the legality of the proposed removal
of Judge Sanford on account of insanity.
They say the Constitution makes no pro
vision for such cases.
The law in Rhode Island against inter
marriage between blacks and whites has
beeu repealed. There is now no such stat
ute in New England, but several of the
northern States porhibit such marriages.
The bill to escheat to the common
wealth the property of telegraph compan
ies which violate an article of the con
stitution forbidding the consolidation of
competing lines has passed the Senate of
this state.
Charles Vance and a companion were
arrested at a prominent hotel New York
Tuesday evening, for being drunk and
disorderly. It is stated that Vance is a
son of United States Senator Vance from
North Carolina. It is rumored that he is
011 his wedding trip.
Certain democrats of Wisconsin have
formed, with a number of republicans, a
Civil Service Reform Association, pledg
ed to the establishing of a system of ap
pointment, promotion and removal in the
cviil service, founded upon the principle
that public office is a public trust, admiss
ion to which should depend upon approv
ed fitness.
