President Garfield despiays excellent sense in his reply to an address by the colored Republicans of Baltimore asking for a fair share of public patronage. The President answers, thut in applications for public oflice the fitness and qualifica tions of the candidates would be consid ered, and that color, in and of itself, would be neither a recommendation nor a bar. That is exactly the right kind of talk, and it is for all the world precisely like President Garfield. He recognizes the absurdity of appointing a man to olli. ce, whether white or black, for the mere purpose of recognizing u race or class, and we are glad to know that he has the independence and frankness to say so. The colored people of Maryland are more zealous than discreet in urging their claims to recognition, and the pains tiiey have taken to gain the attention of the President, savors more of a fondness for the loaves and fishes than it does of a patriotic devotion to principle. The col ored Republicans oi the South, as well as tiiose of the North, are entitled to fair and liberal treatment in bestovvment of official patronage, if they select the right sort of men from among themselves; but it is right and proper that they and others should undeastand that the mere color of a man's skin is not to be taken into ac count. "Is he honest? Is he capable?" These are the true tests, and they should be applied in all cases. The Concord School of Philosophy are making plans for the coming season. This is the school that began under an apple tree in Rev. Aleott's yard. Those interested in Concord School of Philoso phy will be glad to learn of the plans for the coming seasoim The names of Will iam Ilenry Channing, Dr. Peabody, the late Prof. Pierce, and Mr. Emerson will be sadly missed from the accustomed an nouncement by their admirers. It is pos sible, however, that Mr. Emerson may read his short paper on Carlyle. Among the new lecturers are Presidemt Porter and possibly Drs. McCosh and Hopkins. Announcement is also made that lectures may be expected from Dr. Bartol, Dr. Kedney, of Minnesota; Dr. Mulford, of Cambridge; Mr, Wasson, Miss Peabody, and others. Mr. AleoU promises ''Five Conversations on the Philosophy of Life.' Dr. Jones has not specified his exact topics in discussing Platonism, but Dr. Harris announces in detail five lectures on phylosophy and metaphysics, and five more on Hegel and his philosophy. Mr. Emery will give two lectures on "System in Philosodhy," with special reference to the system of Hegel. German Philosophy on literature and society during this ceif tury will be expounded by Mrs. Howe, and Dr. G. S. Hall, a lecturer at Harvard, vviil probably be heard on the later as pect of German scientific thought, tier man literature will be treated by Mr. Sanborn, who will also devote an hour each to American and Roman literature. Mrs. Cheney will speak of what is some times called "The Poetry of the Future," her exact topic being "The Relation Be tween Poetry and Science." Mr. Snider will speak of the Greek poets, especially Horme. Mr. Albee will give two lect ures on general topics* Mr. Blake will give some fresh readings from Thoreau's manuscripts, and Mr. Steachnan will be looked to for a poem. The Lovctt malpractice ease, on trial for twelve days, at Erie, ended Saturday afternoon. Dr. Lovctt has to pay $2,500 for alleged improper treatment of Wen dell Farland's broken arm. Ten thous and dollars was claimed. Samoan advices indicate the triumph of the government party under King Malieto and the collapse of all organized resist ance. Business Cards.
