HENRY BASSET R of Waverly, who former ly resided in this place, lias been in town for several days as a witness in a ease bciug tried before arbitators. Ex-Sheriff SPALDING who lias been staying at his son-in-law's, JOHN W. MIX in this place for a few weeks returned to Athens last evening, much improved in health. C. S. and I). B. STOWF.LL were in town yesterday. Although they are residents of the empire state at present, they have a strong attachment for old Bradford where they both formerly resided and have hosts of friends. EUGENE YANAUKEN, a brakeman on the Barclay road, met with a painful accident yesterday whiie coupling cars at the Foot of Plane. His right band was caught between the bumpers and badly lacerated, the flesh be ing torn asunder nearly to the wrist, but for tunately no bones were broken. He was brought to this place on an engine and Drs. PRATT dressed the wound. The Towanda Musical Society will meet at the residence of Mr. T. C. DELANO, Thurs day, March 31st, at the usual time. EDWARD OVER VOX'S administrator, the Supreme Court has reversed Judge MORROW and the case will be tried here again. Mr. H'ARRIXER, a young gentleman who visited his sisters. Mrs. JKSSEE MYKR and Mrs. PRURIGO in this place last summer, died suddenly at his home in Vineland, N. J., Monday. GIDEON PALMER, father of the Attorney General, died at his home in Lackawanna county, Sunday eveniug. The deceased was an uncle of Mrs. Rev. C\ T. IIAI.LOWKLL of this place. MICHAEL IIICKKY, living about two miles from Canton, was killed while felling trees near his house on Monday. He was discover ered by bis wife. His will divides it equally among his children. The Union tanners of Pittsburg and Al legheny City struck yesterday for an ad vance, averaging twenty per cent. Sev eral firms have already conceded the ad vance. Five cent niekle coins having been pre sented for redemption at the sub-treasury offices in such quantity as to show the amount outstanding to be reabundant, the coinage thereof has been suspended. Two young girls were arrested at Mor. ton, Delware county, for disturbing by laughing and conversation a meeting iu the Methodist church at that place. They were sentenced to pay a fine and £G. It is reported that the stockholders of the Oregon Railway and Navigation Com pany, who are also heavy owners of Northern Pacitic Railroad stock, will commence proceedings to retain the j Northern Pacific from issuing $18,000,000 1 additional common stock. The President lias well decided that an extra session of Cougress will he more trouble than benefit. He will, therefore, meet the payment of bouds us they be come due, and rid himself of entangling legislation, and let the country rernaiu at peace till December. Two murderers, Charles Allen and John Johnson, were ofdened relaased from the Connecticut State Prison by the Legisla ture, yesterday. Both were serving life sentences, the former for killing his broth er, in a fracas, sixteen years ago. and the latter for killing a woman, who assaulted him, a few years rgo. The Rhode Island Prohibitory State Convention nominated Albert C. Howard tor Governor, Alfred B. Chadsey for Lieu tenant-Governor, and adopted the Repub lican nominees for the remainder of the ticket. The Greenbackers nominated for Governor Chas. A. Adams, Lieutenant- Governor, James Jefferson (colored). The funeral of Col. E. A. L. Roberts, was the largest ever witnessed in the oil regions. The streets were lined by thousands of people. Delegations of railroad and other officials from Buffalo as well as from other cities attended, and the various civic societies participated. The Colonel was buried with military honors.
