The testimony in the case of the Towanda
Bridge Company vs. Bradford County was all
given in yesterday. A large number of wit
nesses were examined 011 both sides, and the
trial has been conducted with much ability
and legal acumen. JOHN F. SANDERSON,
Esq., for the bridge company, and L. M. IIALL
Esq. for Bradford county, ably addressed the
jury yesterday, and to-day Hon. IC.OVERTON,
011 the side of the company, and Hon. M. F.
ELLIOTT, for the county, will speak. The
case will probably go to the jury this afternoon*
During the progress of this important trial,
in which the payment of many thousands of
dollars is involved, our borohas been honored
bv the presence of a large number of our sis
ter county's best citizens, who almost without
exception have expressed themselves as pleas
ed with the hospitality shown them by our
people andthe professional courtesy extended
by the court and the bar of our county. Our
village has been extolled for its rural beauty
and the modest elegance and comfort of its
homes, and for the indications of thrift and
substantiality 011 every hand. Whatever may
be the result, we trust and believe that the
disputants will return to their homes and
firesides feeling that no partiality or any un
due means have been brought te bear, that
justice and right have triumphed, and t hat the
friendly relations which have always existed
between the counties of Bradford and Tioga
are only enhanced by the termination of this
trial and its outcome.— Wcllsboro Gazette.
A NOVEL MUTUAL AID SOCIETY..—Thp
most bewildering announcement of modern
times is that of the York, Pa., Marriage Mu
tual Aid Association for unmarried people
which has been incorporated. The associa
tion is open to all unmarried persons, male
or female, from the age of thirteen upwards,
without regard to race, color or previous con
dition of servitude. Upon payment of a cer
tain sum, fixed by a graduated schedule, the
member receives a certificate which entitles
him or her upon proof of marriage after the
expiration of at least one year to receive from
SI,OOO to $5,000, according to the amount]
paid for membership. There are various an
nual dues and assessments, which are suppos
ed to secure the financial standing of the
association. It is apparent at a glance that
the balance of advantages offered by the soci
ety lies decidedly with the stronger sex. A
man need not run the slightest risk in joining
it, for it is the blessed prerogative of his sex
to propose. But in the case of the other sex
the circumstances are very different. For,
although to a woman whose personal disad
vantages
"Have caused all hope to disappear
of even winning man's affection,"
a certificate of membership in this association
would add positive and palpable attractions.
County Auditor U. M. PRATT, of Liberty
Corners, is agent for the Association in this
county. He will cheerfully explain the sub
ject to any who may desire to secure a cer
tificate..
