Dispatches from Harrisburg say the
scenes in the House of Representatives
Monday night beggar description. They
were the most uproariously disgraceful
of this session, which lias been marked
by many scenes unbefitting the dignity of
a legislative body, and it is to lie doubted
if they have often been equaled in previ
ous years. During the session from half
past seven o'clock until ten the house did
no business at all, except to pass three
bills on first reading, on one of which the
yeas and nays were called. The house
applauded one speaker and hissed anoth
er, the speaker pounded with his gavel
until his arm must have ached and still
motions were bulled at the clerk's head
in rapid succession without regard to the
order of business. The lilibusterer was
rampant and lie practiced bis art on eve
ry motion that came before the bouse.
The speaker at length completely lost his
temper and evidently his head, as be
made some grossly unparhmentary rul
ings. The main cause of the row seem
ed to be that tbe Philidelphia members
hare made up their minds to have no
business transacted by the house until
their pet schemes are put through.
The editor of the Cleveland Leader has
been visiting Washington to see the Pres
ident, with whom lie is on familiar inti
macy. The latter alluded to the early
position of his mother, left a widow with
several small children on a meagre farm
partly cleared. For twenty years after
the husband and father died the widow
had never a luxury and scarcely a com
fort of life. "And now," said the great
man, "it has been my study to promote
her happiness and comfort in every way
possible in order to make up for the pri
vations she suffered during my boyhood.
She has the best room in my house, and
there is nothing she wants but what she
always has. Whenever I go to Mentor
she always accompanies me. Whenever
she wishes to go to New Hampshire to
visit her relatives, she goes and 1 always
go with her. In that manner I am try
ing to ma*e up to her what she was de
prived of during the days of her sore
pover.y." The venerable mother has the
best room in the White House and Con
gress generously voted to put an eleva
tor in for her especial accomodation.
She is honored of the nation as well as of
her son.
The temperance law of Kansas forbids
theuse of fermented wine for sacramental
purposes, and many of the churches lind
themselves in a predicament. The rec
tor of the Episcopal church in Lawrence,
Kan., thus referred to the matter last
Sunday:
"The Bishop and clergy of our Qliurch
have decided to pay 110 attention what
ever to any such law. We are, under our
ordination vows, obliged to administer
the sacrament in accordance with the
law and usages of this church. If we do
not do so, we would be stripped of our
ministry. We are willing to render unto
Caisar the things which are Cfcsar's, but
we still give to God the things that are
His. I say, as did Peter, 'Judge ye
whether we should obey men rather than
God.' Of one thing we may lie assured,
we shall never recognize for a moment
the attempts of human legislation to de
stroy the great sacrament of the Chris
tian church."
The reverand gentleman and his breth
ren of the clergy might easily avoid a vi
olation of the law by procuring uufer
mented wine which is now used by many
congregations even where there is no
constitutional provision forbidding the
use of fermented wine.
It is said that the bonds stolen from
the Northampton Savings Bank were re
stored before the release of Leary.
