The Elmira Sunday llepvblican after an
existence of only four weeks, has given up
the ghost. It was not conducted on the right
basis to be a success as a Sunday (?) paper.
It was altogether too decent.
WHAT MAKES A GOOD NEWSPAPER.—The
Louisville Courier-Journal has the following
sensible remarks about conducting a news
paper: "Some people estimate the ability of
a newspaper and the talent of its editor by
the quantity of its original matter. It is com
paratively an easy task for a frothy writer to
pour out daily a column of words—words
upon any and all subjects. His ideas may flow
in one weak, washy, everlasting flood, and
the command of his language may enable him
to string them together like bunches of euions,
and yet his paper may be a meager and poor
concern. Indeed, the mere writing part of
editing a paper is but a small portion of the
work. The care, the time employed in select
ing, is far more important, and the fact of a* i
good editor is better shown by his selections
than by anything else; and that, we know, is
half the battle. But, as we have said, an edi
tor ought to be estimated, and his labor under
stood and appreciated, by the general conduct
of his paper—its tones, its uniform, consistent
course, its manliness, its dignity, and its pro
priety. To preserve these as they should lie
preserved is enough to occupy fully the time
and attention of any man. If to this be added
the general supervision of the newspaper
establishment, which most editors have to
encounter, the wonder is how they fitid time
to write all they do write."
A writer in the Elmira Advertiser describes
some of the leading mercantile houses of
Wyalusing. lie says:

Mr. 11. in the year 1872 noticing the uncom
mon "opening" in his line at this place left a
lucrative position in Elmira and opened a gen
eral hardware store, first purchasing the stock
kept by the several merchants already here.
After running about ten months he took in a
partner and the firm assumed the name of
Kidgway & Howard, which continued for
about fourteen months when Mr. 11. became,
through purchase, again the sole proprietor
and as such has since continued. In his stock
may be found everything in the line of hard
ware from a horse nail upward—and in value
never less than about $12,000. He furnishes
the carriage and iron workers for miles
around, his sales averagiug, all told, not less
than $25,000, per annum. Mrs. Howard at
tends to the hooks and other store work and
is a most valuable assistant. Although in a
large and commodious store, yet if the hard
ware business continues to develop as in the
past, Mr. 11. must move to even more exten
sive quarters, (which rumor says will soon
come to pass) in order to accommodate his
most flourishing trade. We uext pass iuto
the store bearing the name of
GAY LORD, SUMNER & CO.,
A firm whose active members are young
men of "sterling make-up" and who enjoy the
entire confidence of the public. At these
quarters was the well-known house of Acklev,
Lloyd &> Blocher in prosperous business for
many years and it was a happy event that in
stalled men like the named as their successors.
Mr. G. attends to ttie purchasing of goods and
has won for himself an enviable reputation in
the excellent taste displayed in their choice.
The hooks are also allotted to his care while
Mr. 8. attends to purchasing of country pro
duce and other departments upon which he
evinces superior judgment. This firm, like
the above, is solid, prosperous and happy. In
a few days Mr. G. goes to New York and
Boston from whence he will lay in for Spring
and Summer trade a large and careful selected
stock of goods. They seem to know just what
their customers wants are and meet them.
Their stock runs from SIO,OOO to $12,000.
