The I>ilv Review. Towanda, Pa., Saturday, March 19,1881. KDITOKB : S. W. ALVORD. NORLE N. ALVORD. '* Daily tterie*r" only Hi cent* per month. Try it. * For the Ladies. A well known modiste visited an im porting house in New York this week and made copious notes of the fashionable fa brics she saw, which were just opened and which are designed for the coming season. She reports most of the new spring styles have something striking about them that will at once arrest atten tion. The new embroidered batistes are unique in design, and in combinations of form and color show an ambitious at tempt at decorative art. There is every variety of pattern, and the shades which indicate what fashion's decree for the next months is, vary from pale ; 'oldlace" to the delicate light brown. Threads of gold run through it all. The broad bands are for the dress, and the narrower ones for the carsage and sleeves. The latest open satin fronts —mostly white—for dresses are adorned with jet and faceted beads of polished steel, or embroidered with creamy seed pearls. Some spring mantles of gros grain silk and Radzmere, profusely cohered with novel bead work, are exhibited, of Which only a few dupli cates have been or are to be sold in Eu rope. The new feature of the morning dresses shown was the addition of a touch of delicate embroidery. White cambric is the favorite material. Baya, deer is the name of a new cloth, which is used with charming effect with plain goods such as camel's hair or cashmere. It is of olive-green, brown or other dark ground, lighted up with threads of gold or other light colors. The fabric takes its name from the Nautch dancing girls, by whom it is much worn. The season brings no radical change In the character of print goode. The material appears to be improved in quality and the figures are delicate, yet clear and artistic. The Board of Health, of New York, has issued a circular "Ilow to tell Diphth eria." "Give heed," it says, "the moment that you observe signs iuyour child of unwonted weakness, fatigue of physical debility, particularly if it is accompanied with a little fever. Make the child fre quently open its mouth, so that you can observe its throat. It is the throat that the lay observer will first observe any signs of diphtheria. Never mind how red or inflamed the throat may appear. That does not indicate the disease. But the instant that you see a white spot and detect a bad odor run for a doctor. The white spot will grow. Other white spots will appear, and eventually they will run together in great blotches if the disease is not checked. The time to summon medical assistance is before these spots run together. The proposed International Cotton Ex position, to be held at Atlanta, Ga., starts off with the mo st flattering prospects The citizens of that city responded with great promptness and enthusiasm. In fact their earnest determination has se cured the success of the undertaking All the solid men work with a will and a •vim to carry through the enterprise. The railroad and steamship lines, home and foreign, are liberal subscribers. The programme of the exhibition is now be ing prepared, the list of premiums and awards. It will be the flnst exhibition Of cotton products ever got together. The women of Wisconsin though beat en are not dismayed. They are re-organ izing for another effort to obtain the right of suffrage. Ex-Governor William Beach Lawrence, oflihode Island, an eminent jusist is dy ing at a hotel in New York, age 83.
