large iron-gray horse to GEO. C. ATWOOD, of
llerrick, for S2OO. and the purchaser is de
lighted with his bargain.
The members of OscaluwaGrange are to be
treated to a literary feast to-morrow evening,
as well as something more substantial for the
inner man. It is hoped all the patrons and
matrons will be present to enjoy the occasion.

The watch advertised in the REVIEW yes
terday morning, as " lost or stolen." was re
turned to the loser a few hours after the pu
per was distributed. The finder happened to
be an honest man. PAT O'BOYLE, who read
the notice and at once restored the time piece
to Mr. SMITH,
The sale ot tickets for the Helen Potter
Pleiades begins Monday morning next, the
21st inst.
We find the following in the Elmira Adver
tiser of yesterday, but inquiry among the
colored people here fails to confirm the
strange story so far as it relates to this place:
A peculiar case came before the Recorder
yesterday forenoon. It seems that a black
vanman who used to live in Elmira, with a
man named John Roy, now lives in Towanda
and has for years, with a man whose name is
not known. She was married to Roy. who
vet lives in this city. Mrs. Roy,as that is her
legal name, has a daughter aged thirteen, lie
sides several other children. A short time
ago Mrs. Roy came to Elmira to settle up
some business left by the death of a relative.
This thirteen year eld daughter was left at
home in Towanda. John Roy claims that he
is her father, and while the mother was here
in Elmira, lie skipped down to Towanda and
brought, back with him the tender representa
tive of his own flesh and blood. Yesterday
forenoon the whole crowd appeared before
the Recorder to have the dispute settled, but
• His Honor made short work of it. The child
acknowledged that she greatlv preferred liv
'ng with her father, and the Recorder said,
"Then go home with him." In the afternoon
Mrs. Roy again appeared in the court to see
if she could not get a habeas corpus, Bhe said
the child was not Roy's, but. the other man's — l
and byway of corroboration said—"She j
wasn't born until more than a year after we >
parted, and every woman ought to know who
the father of her children is." The Recorder
blushed a little and said that was correct —she
ought, but His Honor could do nothing to help
her recover her child, and referred her to the
County Judge for anything in the habeas cor- '
pus line. As she left the room Bijah French
remarked that perhaps the way to settle the
matter was to do as old king Solomon recom
mended, "cut it in two and give both half."
Tin 11 the mother did get mad, and flashed a
look at the suggester of such a cold blooded
arbitration that sent him for refuge behind
Bijah Kelly, and followed it with the volun
tary clincher—"No sah, John Roy shan't have
even a piece of what he lias not helped pay
for." After she retired the court and the
officers entered into a statistical discussion
and came to the conclusion that a boy will
have cost his father one thousand dollars
when he has reached his tenth year, and a
girl fifteen hundred, and that if John Roy
comes to his brevet wife's terms, lie will have
to squander about SI7OO to hold peaceable
possession of the unfortunate progeny that
has caused such au unhappy litigation.
At last accounts the habeas corpus had not
been served.
