    DAILY
TOWANDA REVIEW.
VOLUME 11, NO. 178.
ADDITIONAL LOCAL.
Personal.
Mrs. JOHN SULLIVAN, of Lombard street,
is visiting friends in Sullivan county.
W. S. NEVINS, of Waverly, was visiting in
town a short time yesterday.
C. 31. BUFFINGTON went to New York last
night to l>e present at the marriage of his
brother, which occurs this evening.
Our young friend ANDREW DELPEUCII, of
Sheshequin, lias gone to lowa to take charge
of rt farm which his father owns, near Ne
vada in that state. He is a practical farmer
and an industrious worthy gentleman. We
wish him success in his venture.
A Washington special to the Philadelphia
Press yesterday expresses the opinion that
Capt. 11. P. GOODRICH will be appointed to
the vacant Surveyorsbip at that Port. The
dispatch savs Senator CAMERON favors him.
The "for rent" department of the REVIEW
is frequently consulted nowadays. If you
have property to let or if vbu desire to hire,
advertise.
LOST OR STOLEN.—A silver watch with
leather chain and two littie keys. The tinder
will lie well paid by returning itto the owner,
E. W. SMITH.
FITCH has new maple sugar which is not
only genuine, but was made in Orwell, where
the art of .sugar making is understood and
practiced in perfection.
The day of meeting of the ladies' missionary
society of Christ Church has been changed.
It will meet this week and hereafter 011 Fri
day, at 2 p. in., in the lecture room.
There are said to be a good many persons
in this place who pay a government tax as
dealers in the ardent, who forget to supply
themselves with the licence required by state
law. In oilier words, the agents of "Uncle
Sam" are more particular iu collecting the
revenues than the borough and state officials.
The remains of DAN MCDONALD, formerly
of Sullivan county, but who had resided in
Colorado for the past live years, passed thro'
this place 011 their way to Dushorc for inter
ment yesterday. The body was accompanied
by 3IIL.ES 31CDONALD, A brother of the de
ceased, and whose family have been spending
the winter in Sullivan county.
We did not attend the performance of Uncle
Tom's Cabin at Mercur Hall Monday evening,
but those who were there pronounce it the
best representation of the popular stoiy of
slavery times ever witnessed here. The hall
was literally packed. By the way, two per
formances not 011 the bills came off' while the
company were here. The bloodhounds got
loose and had a fight, and two of tiie artists
got married.
A branch of the Irish National Land League
has been organized in this place, and the fol
lowing officers elected:
President— AßTHUß 11. BURCIIILL.
IT' ce-President —WM. WELSH.
Recording Secretary— JAMES KELLY.
Financial Secretary— JOHN SCANLAN.

"SOMETIMES CORRECT."—The editors of
the REVIEW do not claim to bo infallible, but
do insist that they take extraordinary pains
to be reasonably accurate in giving the local
and current news, and flatter themselves that,
considering the limited time and imperfect
facilities they enjoy, their reports are as near
ly correct as those of most other journals.—
Conscious of our honest endeavors to furnish
a reliable local paper, we felt somewhat hurt
the other evening on hearing a friend and
subscriber remark to ouc who does not take
the paper, •• The REVIEW gets things correct
sometimes Such compliments are not eu
couraging after a year and a-half of earnest,

poorly remunerated effort to establish a daily
which has come to be quite generally acknowl
edged a necessity here. We begto assure our
friend that if lie will carefully watch our col
umns and be as particular to give credit for
correct and valuable items, as he is to criticise
our failings, we feel confident lie will not
again permit himself to make such ungener
ous and damaging remarks, and that he will
be constrained to confess that " the REVIEW
is not only sometimes," but as a rule very
accurate in its statements. That it is read is
evidenced by his own criticism.
Miss LILLIAN CIIASK was not greeted with
an audience at all commensurate with her
merits last aveuing, but the fact did not in
the least detract from the very .interesting
programme and every selection was rendered
with as much animation as though the Hall
had been crowded. Miss CIIASE is a born
artist and enters thoroughly into the spirit of
her theme, forgetting self in the perfect im
personation of the characters she selects. In
many of her performances she is absolutely
without an equal, and at no distant day will
be the acknowledged Queen of her profess
ion. She lias both talent and culture and
cannot fail of winning success she so pre-em
inently merits.
