One of our exchanges which wo greatly
prize is theTunkhannock Republican. Judge
therefore, of our disappointment on opening
the copy received on Friday evening, 1® find
it dated January 21.
JAMES MACFARLANK, Esq., lectures in the
chapel of the Institute this evening. We have
not been advised as t# the title of the lecture,
but "what's in a name?" We know it will be
good, and hope our citizens will evidence
their appreciation by giving the speaker a
large audience.
Uncle Tom's Cabin, which always draws
like a circus, from all classes, was given at
the Opera House last evening before the larg
est audience of the season, there being but
standing room only shortly after the doors
were opened, and many were turned away.
The novel features of the performance were
the introduction of genuine Cuban blood
hounds and a live donkey, which gave a real
istic air to the scenes. The company carry
their own scenery, which is very good, notie
ably the steamboat, the cotton field and the
transformation scenes. Mr. GEORGE E.
STEVENS, the proprietor, is one of the pio
neers in the "Uncle Tom" busineas, and the
combination has drawn packed houses this
season. Judging from the applause hut eve
ning, the representation was a great succesa,
and the company will undoubtedly enjoy a
similar benefit on their return, which, we are
aasured, will be before the close of the pres

We clip the following notice concerning the
well-known firm of THORN, MCFARLAND A
Co., proprietors of several tanneries in this
section, from the Tribune of Thursday:
Messrs. Thorn & McFarland, leather mer
chants, of No. 76 Gold street, learned several
months ago that they were losing twenty
four or thirty sides of leather eveiy week in
some mysterious manner. Inspector Byrnes
detailed Detectives Heidelberg, .Polan and
Maloney to work up the cas#,aud they watch
ed the Movements of the truckmen who cart
ed the leather from the Pennsylvania Railway
Station, or the store, to Pier No. 2, North
River, for shipment. After some time it was
discovered that a conspiracy had been entered
into between James Shea, age twenty-four, of
No. 144 East Broadway, Daniel Haggerty, age
twenty-three, of No. 24 Water street", and
Henry Kuhacker, ag® twenty-six, of No. 27
Frankfort street, truckmen, whereby the
property of Messrs. Thorn A McFarland was
systematically stolen. It was taken from the
loads, and was subsequently removed to Jer
' aey City, where one of tlie truckmen met
Joseph Price, of Bayard street, this city, who
was acting in concert with a man named
Aaron Goldberg, a Russian, doing business at
No. 34 Market street. Goldberg received the
leather in Jersey City, and it is alledged that
one delivery o* January 27 consisted of thirty
seven sides, valued at $l5O.
The accused men were arraigned before
Justice Morgan yesterday at the Tombs Police
Court. Shea and Haggerty were held for trial
each in default of SI,OOO bail. Joseph Price
and Aaron Goldberg, the alleged receivers,
were requested to furnish bonds each in
$1,500, and Kuhacker was sent to the House
of Detention as a witness in default of SI,OOO
bail. It is stated that the losses sustained by
Messrs. Thorn A McFarland amount to several
thousand dollars.

GERMANIA ORCHESTRA ASSEMBLIES.
Will hold their first of the series in Means'
Hall this evening at 8 o'clock. The commit
tee begs to announce to the public that the
series will be conducted in the most respecta
ble manner. Parents who conic as escort to
their children are particularly invited, and
will be admitted free. The late dancing class
of Prof. Danielle are also respectfully invited.
The program will embrace all the dances
taught in the late school, with an addition of
waltz quadrille. Ticket s admitting gentleman
