The fact that hackmcn are iu the habit of
carrying passengers over the bridge with
lighted cigars in their mouths, haveing coma
to the knowledge of the commissioners, those
officials desire us to call attention to the gross
violation of regulations, and to say that here
after the penalty will bo enforced in such
cases. Hackinen are particularly requested
to call the attention of their passengers to the
danger of violating the law prohibiting smok
ing in the bridge.
A few evenings since WM. VEKMILYA, of
Grover,Bradford county, was interviewed by
highwaymen near Fox Centre, * Sullivan
county. The following are the particulars as
reported by a correspondent of the Canton
Sentinel: "He was on his way home from
Hillsgpovc, when he was stopped by three
men, one taking the horse by the bits, and one
taking him by the throat and demanding his
money. By making a desperate effort he re
leased himself and struck the man with the
butt end of his whip and his horse at the
same time, and thus made good his escape!"—
'l'unkliannock Hepubllcan
A Candor, N. Y'., correspondent of the
Owego Blade, iu speaking of Miss LILLIAN
CHASE'S recent appearance in that place says :
"Miss Lillian Chase, a fine elocutionist, gave
an entertainment at Young's Hall last Thurs
day evening, before a crowded house. This
was the finest entertainment given in Candor
for many years, and had we space, we would
be pleased to give a complete review of it.
The readings were all exceedingly well ren
dered, and the impersonations, particularly
that of a "Very Naughty Little Girl" were
excellent. Miss Chase won golden opinions
for herself here, and we trust will erelong
make a second appearance iu Candor."
Miss CIIASE will give an entertainment in
this place again on the 15th inst.
