The following comments of the press of the country on the inaugural of President Garfield arc highly gratifying: The Columbia, S. C., News snd Courier says Garfield's treatment of the Southern question in his inaugural is broad aud on the whole, statesman like. We thank the President for an admission so rare in these days that the responsibility for slavery did not rest upon the South alone. The Boston Advertiser says Garfield's inaugural is a weighty, solemn declara tion unexceptionable in thought aud style, based upon uudeniable and impreg uable principles and solid in argument. The remarks on finance it would not be possible to improve upon. The Journal also cordially endorses the President's address. The Herald thinks Mr. Garfield iu his address met a great opportunity like a man sure of his ground, resolute in pur pose full of high faith iu the people. The Post says the general tone and point of the address is patriotic. Little can be found in it but what will commend itself to the favor of men of all parties. The New York Staatz Zcituny says: Garfield's moderation in discussing the Southern questiou and the tone of all his remarks in reference to the duties of the National Government aud the relation to the States must give general satisfaction outside circles of extreme Republicans. His treatment of the financial question is thoroughly satisfactory perhaps with the exception that he is too one sided in linking together the funding and banking questiou. The New Tork Tribune says: The ad dress is admirable. It justifies the high confidence which the people felt in Gar field's patriotism, uprightness, and in his ability to propose a wise policy for the government of the Nation. It still re mains for him to show whether he pos sesses the rare tact of patience and prac tical statesmanship to get things done. If so the Nation will manifest its grati tude four years hence as heartily as it now manifests its good wili and confi dence. The consumption of malt liquor in this country has increased over one hundred per cent, in ten years. "During 1880" says the Entailer, the organ of the brew ers, "taxes were paid on 18,374,000 bar rels, or 414,000,000 gallons. This is equivalent to 150 mugs for every man, woman and child in this country. Leav ing out the females, and childred, this vast quantity represents GOO glasses a year for each male over tweuty-oue years old in the United States. When we con sider the very large number of adult males who drink no beer at all, and the other host who partake of it ouly iu the most moderate manner, aud at more or less protracted intervals, it is evident that some Americans must drink a great deal. At five cents a glass this beer manufacture of 1880 brought $375,000,- 000, $7 50 per capita for each man, woman aud child. This is a quarter more than the total expense of running the United States Government. The Democrats are yelling that the Re publicans are responsible for an extra session of Congress. In the same man ner they said the Republicans were re sponsible for the war. But that is not all the Republican party is responsible for. It is responsible for the perpetuation ©f the Uuiou, and for preventing a panic that would have been almost as disas trous to business as auother war. What ever the Republican party has accom plished it has accomplished by defeatiug the Democrats. FIW PACTS in regard to the • White Sewing Machine, It is an "acknowledged fact that the White Sewing Machine now stands pre eminent among first-class machines, for its simplicity and light-running qualities. It is a mechanical fact that the White Sewing Machine is made from the best material and of excellent workmanship, and all its wearing parts are adjustable, so that lost motion can be "taken up" in an instant. It is an undisputed fact that the dura bility of the White Sewing Machine is sustained by a written warranty for five years. It is a progressive fact that the White embodies the most practical and useful improvements of other sewing machines, together with advantages peculiarly its own. It is a money-making fact that the White is the easiest-selling selling ma chine in the market, and therefore all wide-awake dealers make it their specialty. It is a gratifying fact that the White gives universal satisfaction, and that it is steadily and rapid'.y increasing In public favor. CAUTION. Do not bo imposed upon by agents and parties who are interested in the purchase and sale et'other machines. It has become a common trick for un scrupulous competitors to get a White machine and put it in had order so that they might prejudice pur chasers against it and in favor of their own machines. To guard against such contemptible trickery, we advise all intending purchasers to correspond with us direct, and we will take pleasure In giving them the address of a regular authorized dealer for the "White" In their county, or wo will oiler to sell them a machine direct at special prices, and guaran tee satisfaction in every respect.
