The State Insane Asylum at Danville,

ty were confined, was discovered to be on
fire Saturday evening. The institution
is located a mile aud-a-lialf out of the city
and before the fire companies could reach
it the maiu building and east wing were
enveloped in flames and past saving. The
fire was stayed before the west wing was
destroyed. The fire broke out again yes
terday afternoon, but by the aid of fire
men from adjoining towns a portion of
the west wing was saved.
There were nearly five hundred patients
in the institution, all of whom were re
moved without confusion. A few escaped
but were recaptured. The inmates who
could not be provided for in the west
wing were taken to Harrisburg.
The fire originated in the paint room
and is believed to have been caused by
spontaneous combustion.
