Mr. Grow's conduct with regard to the
late Senatorial contest has been criticised
even by some of his friends; but the fol
lowing card from that gentleman ought
to set him right before the public; It was
addressed to the Ilarrisburg Telegraph.
Will you allow me space in your col
umns to correct a misapprehension, which
I see by the newspaper press of the State
is somewhat widely extended. That is,
that my withdrawal as a candidate for
United States Senator was influenced by
the expectation of being a candidate for
Governor two years hence. Under no
circumstance would I become a candidate
for Governor then or at any other time.
At the conference referred to with Mr. Ol
iver, Senator Cameron and Col. Quay, to
which I was invited, a few hours before
it took place, nothing was then said, or
at any other time by either or any of them
about Governor, and no assurance,pledge
or promise of any kind, was made by
either, except that if a candidate for U. S.
Senator was elected by agreement of both
divisions of the Republicans in the Leg
islature, that in that case such division
and the individuals composing it, were to
be regarded and treated alike in all re
spects as members of the Republican par
ty. By-gones to be by-gones.
Eacli of us, i. e., Senator Cameron,Col.
Quay, Mir. Oliver and myself were to use
all our inllueuce with whoever should be
elected to secure Irom him such recogni
tion and treatment of all who had partici
pated in the Senatorial conflict on either
side.
This was the clearly expressed under
standing ol us all before any reference
was made as to any probable candidate
that might be agreed on by the Respec
tive divisions. It was not understood
that we were to settle on a candidate in
case Mr. Oliver and I both withdrew, but
names talked over were to be presented
merely as suggestions to the caucus of
each division for their action and ifcither
did not like one of the names presented
they would agree on some other.
My judgment had been clear for weeks
that if Mr. Oliver should propose to with
draw as a candidate, in the interest of
harmony for the party, that there would
be no proper course for me but to do the
same thing, and that was the expressed
opinion of a large number of my sincere
friends. GALUSIIA A. GROW.
Glenwood, Susq'a Co., Feb. 18, 1881.
In concluding au article on the change
of administrations yesterday, the Elmira
Advertiser says : "Of the incoming ad
ministration we have nothing to fear and
everything to hope. General Garlleld is
a man of deeper and broader statesman
ship than his predecessor, and his long
experience in Congress has made him
familiar with the needs ot the govern
ment and the people. We confidently
look for a speedy and satisfactory solu.
tion of the Southern problem, and believe
the time is not far distant wheu the rights
of all classes of citizens in that section
will be as firmly asserted and fully recog
cd and protected as those of the North.
There will be an end to bull-dozing, vio
lence, intimidation and wholesale fraud,
and every voter "can cast one ballot, and
have that ballot "counted precisely as it
is cast." There is a master-mind and a
strong hand at the helm, now; and, under
the blessing of Divine Providence, we
believe "that all things may be so order
ed and settled upon the best and surest
foundations that peace and happiness,
truth and justice, religion and piety, may
be established among us for all genera
tions." Farewell to President Hayes!
A hearty welcome to President Garfield."
FBW PACTS
in regard to the
White
Sewing
Machine.
It is an acknowledged fact that the
White Sewing Machine now stands pre
eminent among flrst-class machines, for
its simplicity and light-running qualities.
It is a mechanical fact that the White
Sewing Machine is made from the best
material and of excellent workmanship,
and all its wearing parts are adjustable,
so that lost motion can be "taken up" in
an instant.
It is an undisputed fact that the dura
bility of the White Sewing Machine is
sustained by a written warranty for live
years.
It is a progressive fact that the White
embodies the most practical and useful
improvements of other sewing machines,
together with advantages peculiarly its
own.
It is a money-making fact that the
Wnite is the easiest-selling selling ma
chine in the market, and therefore ail
wide-awake dealers make it their specialty.
It is a gratifying fact that the White
gives universal satisfaction, and that it i"
steadily and rapidly increasing in public
favor.
CAUTION.
Do not be imposed upon by agents and parties
who aru interested in the purchase and sale of other
machines. It lias become a common trick for un
scrupulous competitors to get a White machine and
put it in had order so that they might prejudice pur
chasers against it and in l'avor of their own machines.
To guard against such contemptible trickery, we
advise all intending purchasers to correspond with
us direct, and we will take pleasure in giving them
the address of a regular authorized dealer for the
"White" in their county, or wo will offer to sell
them a machine direct at special prices, and guarau
tee satisfaction in every respect.
