The Postmaster General lias issued an or
der revoking the section of postal regulations
in force for the past two years, which per
mitted the transmitting through the mails Of
commercial paper and blanks filled out in
writing, such as invoices, way-bills, bills of
merchandise, deeds, insurance policies, etc.,
lit third-class rates, viz: one cent for each 2
ounces or fraction thereof. All such matter
must hereafter be paid at letter rates, three
cents per half ounce.
The conductors, baggagemasters and brake
meu ou the Lehigh Valley trains donned their
new uniforms yesterday. The suits are quite
becoming; the material is fine navy blue
cloth, made up in good style. The conduct
or's coat is a double-breasted frock, millitary
patcrn, and that of the baggagemaster of
muck the same appearance, but a sack. The
brakeman also wears a sack nearly like that
worn by the Pennsylvania R. 11. hands. Wc
understand the suits including caps to match,
are furnished by the Company without ex
pense to the employes.
The wife of Rev. A. G. STILWELL, of
Lynn, Suiquehaunah county, died on Sunday
of last week iu consequence of an abnor
mal growth which was called dropsy. She
bad been increasing iu size for several years
aud at the time of her death her weight was
estimated to be over five hundred pounds. A
post mortem examination showed that tlie
flesh over the abdomen was six inches thick
and also revealed the presence ot about a gal
lon of dropsical water.
The burial casket was two feet square and
eleven pall-bsarers were employed. Notwith
standing her enormous weigh she was re
markably active until a short time before her
4eath, and she-insisted on performing a con
-siderablc part of her household work.— Tunk
hannock Republican.
In speaking of the gifted young artist, Miss
LILLIAN CHASE, who is to appear for the
second time in this place two weeks hence,
the Syracuse Daily Journal says:— 44 Her
voice which seems to be of contralto register,
is most distinct and effective when in iis nat
ural tone, and words are spoken in somewhat
measured length. It is rich, full and mellifi
lous, and readily adapts itself to almost any
style of composition. The young lady is one
of the most promising students in the profes
sion. She has a wonderful power to origi
nate, many of her own ideas having been in
troduced with splendid results. She possess
es a remarkable memory, and her ability to
jniitate both in voice and manner, is surpris
ing. Her features have surprising mobility,
and change with great rapidity in the person
ation of various characters. Though the time
has been short since her appearance as a fin
ished reader, she has already won an enviable
reputation. The young ladyjis certainly des
tined to win a high position in her art."
