The conference committee on the Post
Office Appropriation bill, the Legislative,
Executive ancl Judicial Appropriation
hills and the District Appropriaton bill,
respectively, all reached final agreements
Saturday evening. The amounts in con
troversy in the Post Office bill have in
each case been compromised at one-lnilf
the Senate increase. The principal con
troverted portions of the Legislative bill
are the provision made by the Senate for
a large increase of the clerical force in
the Interior and War Departments, and
to facilitate the settlement of pension
clames. These provisions are all agreed
to by the House conferees, and will uu
doubtedlo remain in the bill.
Mrs Hayes will take General Garfield's
mother and wife to the Capitol in her
carriage to witness the ceremonies. On
their return to the White House Mrs.
Hayes will preside at a lunch, at which
the incoming and the outgoing olllcers
will be guests, and she will then resign
the keys of the White House closets to
Mrs. Garfield. Mr. and Mrs. Hayes will
pass some days at the residence of Secre
tary Sherman, 011 K street. Much of the
private property of President Hayes has
already been packed up and will be
shipped early this week to his home in
Eremont, Ohio._
The burning of the Catholic Orphan
Asylum at llyedParke,LuzerneCounty,last
Sunday night is one of the most distress
ing calamities that has ever been record
ed in Pennsylvania, and onewhose details
will make the stoutest heart shudder. The
coal regions of the State have been the
scene of some of the most terrible events
in our recent history, but none of them
ever caused a more genuine thrill of hor
ror than will this last uud most awful
disaster. The cause of the fire was, of
course, a "defective flue."
The agreement entered into on Wed
nesday between the United States and
Spain, provides that all claims for injuries
done to the citizens of the United States
by the authorities of Spain in Cuba, since
the first of October, 18G8, which have not
heretofore been presented to the Com
mission now sitting in Washington, shall
be so presented within sixty days. In
cases where reasons for delay shall be es
tablished to the satisfaction of the arbi
trators, the period for presenting claims
may be extended, not exceeding thirty
days longer. The commission shall de
cide every claim thus presented within a
year from May 12th, unless delay is nec
essary for justice.
In the case of White against the Old
Dominion S. S. Company for $40,000
damages by the loss of the excursion
steamer llockaway, the jury in New York
on Saturday awarded the plaintiff $35,000
with live per cent allowance. The de
fendants agreed to tow the llockaway to
New York from Norfolk, Va., with one of
their steamers and neglecting storm
signals the weather became so rough
tliat they cut the llockaway loose and she
drifted ashore and was broken to pieces.
Gen. Grant is reported as saying that
the World's Fair will fail unless the site
is changed from luwood to Central Park.
He thinks the Park will not be seriously
injured by the Fair, Grant may go to
Mexico in a couple of weeks and possibly
may not return until two or three months
later.

FEW FACTS
in regard to the
White
Sewing
Machine.
It is an acknowledged fact that the
White Sewing Machine now stands pre
eminent among lirst-class machines, for
its simplicity and light-running qualities.
It is a mechanical fact that the White
Sewing Machine is made from the best
material and of excellent workmanship,
and all its wearing parts are adjustable,
so that lost motion can be "taken up" in
an instant.
It is an undisputed fact that the dura
bility of the White Sewing Machine is
sustained by a written warranty for five
years.
It is a progressive fact that the White
embodies the most practical and useful
improvements of other sewing machines,
together with advantages peculiarly its
own.
It is a money-making fact that the
Wnite is the easiest-selling selling ma
chine in the market, and therefore all
wide-awake dealers make it their specialty.
It is a gratifying fact that the White
gives universal satisfaction, and that it is
steadily and rapidly increasing in public
favor.
CAUTION,
Do not he imposed upon by agents and parties
who are interested in the purchase and sale sf other
machines. It lias become a common trick for un
scrupulous competitors to get a White machine and
put it in had order so that they might prejudice pur
chasers against it and in favor of their own machines.
To guard against such contemptible trickery, we
advise all intending purchasers to correspond with
us direct, and we will take pleasure in giving them
the address of a regular authorized dealer for tlio
"White" in their county, or we will offer to sell
them a machine direct at special prices, and guaran
tee satisfaction in every respect.
