President Fox, of the Citizens Xationa'
Bank, visited Binghamton Sa urday.
Senator MITCHELL is a cousin of Mrs. F. J.
CALKINS, of this place.
SAM D. MADDEN, of Minnesota, is visiting
his friends in this county.
ALVAH SMITH is just out after a siege of
ten days with quinsy.
Mrs. LULL of Bernice was in town Satur
day.
Mrs. J. I). SWAIN is very sick, and her
friends entertain fears for her recovery.
FRANK LEAVENWORTH, of Wilkes Barre,
was in town yesterday to attend the funeral
ot his aunt, Mrs. SCOTT.
Gno. M. I)IVEN, and wife, of Elmiraspent
Sunday in this place as the guests of Col. and
Mrs. MEANS.
WILLIE KING, of MOUILLHSSEAUX'S jew
elry store, is confined to his home with an
attack of rheumat ism and heart disease.
WALTER SCOTT, of Baltimore, is in town,
having been called here to attend the funeral
of his mother.
We regret to announce that Mrs. Gen.
FATTON still continues ill, and her physician
has serious doubts as to the result.
Rev. E. J. MORRIS, the able and eloquent
Congregational minister at Xeath, was in
town Saturday.
OLLIE BENNETT, of Fitch's confectionery
store, is sll lie ring from a had cold, and has
been confined to his room fur a few days.
Mrs. IIILLIS stays with her husband in
Harrisburg. It would be a good thing if all
the members would take their wives with
them.
Our former townsman, GEO. 11. ESTKLL*
proved so popular as burgess of Canton bor
ough last year, that he was re-elected, not
withstanding he declined to be a candidate.
CHAS. C. MILLER, an employe at FROST'S
factory, was quite badly injured 011 Thursday
last. A piece of board was thrown violently
from a circular saw, and struck him.
The " Sandwich Club," whatever that is,
met at Mr. EVANS' on Friday evening.
The snow has nearly all disappeared from
this section, and a warm rain of several
hours was experienced last evening.
The hour of evening service at Christ
Church (KpiscopJ) has been changed to 4:30
on Sunday afternoon, and 7:4) 011 Thursday
evening. Services will he held Ash Wednes
day at 10:30 a. m. and 4:30 p. in. Mrs. MER
GER'S Bible Class will meet immediately af
ter the Sunday afternoon service.
The late Mrs. Judge GEORGE SCOTT was
buried yesterday. The services were con
ducted by Rev. Doctor STEWART, and a large
concourse followed the remains to Riverside
cemetary. The pail-bearers were: M. C'.
MERCTR, JAS MACFARLANE, X. X. BUTTS,
Col. J. F. MEANS, A. WICKHAM, and J. V.
WILLCOCK. D'A OVERTON, iEsq., directed
the arrangements.
We arc indebted to Rev. I. H. TORRANCE,
agent Pennsylvania Bible Society, for a little
pamphlet containing specimen verses of the
Scriptures in 215 languages and dialects,
printed by that society. Through the good
ofiices of the Bible Societies it may truly be
said by almost every nation under the sun,
"We do hear them speak in our own tongue
the wonderful woiks of God."
H. W. MILLER, the hackman, has fitted up
a neat and convenient office, one door below
the Council Rooms, on Park street, where he
will be pleased to see his friends and all in

want of liis services. lie has placed a letter
box in the window, so that orders may be left
in his absence. Requests deposited in the
box will receive prompt attention, it will be
examined defore every train in time to make
calls anywhere in town.
At the 711 ito society meeting at Mr. MER
CL'K'S Friday evening, refreshments were
served by young ladies decorated with white
! aprons and MARTHA WASHINGTON caps.

Another Terrible Calamity!
BURNING OF THE CATHOLIC ORPH

TEEN LIVES LOST!
The Catholic Orphanage at Hyde Park,
Scranton, was burned last night. The
! institution was under rhe care of Sisters
of Charity and contained forty children,
seveuteen of whom pprishcd from sutl'oca
tion. The fire was discovered just after
the children had been sent to bed. The
Sisters made every exertion to save the
children.

Mr. Sprague's counsel has given notice
to Mrs. Sprague to be ready lor the tria
of their divorce suit next Friday.
A Cincinnati paper of Saturday asserts
that it is definitely settled that Gen. Gar
j field has decided to make Gov. Foster
| P. M. General.
Eckley Coxe, the Democratic Senator
who refused to take the election bribery
oatli and was smlsequcntly re-elected, was
sworn in Thursday.
Dr. John Cotton Smith, Rector of the
Church of the Ascension, New York, was
assauleed by a thief Friday night, and
badly bruised about the head.
A Washington dispatch says many of
the democratic Members are alarmed at
the attitude of the banks and that the
funding bill may possibly be clefeates.
Mr. A. C. Hopkins of Lock Haven, Pa.,
estimates that 15,000,000 feet of lumber
passed down the Susquehannah during
he recent Hood. Lumbermen are prepar
ing or another freshet, knowing that a
woods.
There seems to be growing impression
! with many members of the House who
j voted for the funding bill, that it was ill
I advised. Some acknowledge that had
j they fully realized the effect to the fifth
I section they would not have voted for it.
A fuel famine is prevailing at Sioux
Falls, Dakota,and telegraph poles are cut
down for fuel. The public schools are
closed and business is generally suspend
ed, Owing to the drifts no trains are ex
pected for several days. The people are
burning corn. At Parker part of the rail
road track was taken up and the ties
burned.
The legal tenders received by the Treas
ury yesterday from the National banks
for the purpose of retiring circulation,
amounted to $2,800,000, being the depos
its of twelve banks, two in New York,
one in Philadelphia, Boston and Albany,
and the remainder from banks in Penn
sylvania, New York and New Jersey.
