The ladies of the Universalist Church will hold a sociable at the residence of HENRY KINGSBURY, this Tuesday evening. All are cordially invited to attend. The tinest building lot in Towanda borough •corner of Poplar and Second streets, between the residence of lion. E. O. Goodrich and E. Walker, will be sold cheap. Apply to O. D. Kinney. The Smithiield affair has been looked up on as the greatest outrage ever perpetrated in this section, but a trick was played off on this office the other day in comparison with which, that sensation pales into insignificance. Hon est men will blush with shame when they read the particulars, and be on their guard against the unscrupulous fellow. The great crime perpetrated was this: A certain gen tleman passed upon the unsuspecting editor of the BEVIKW a bogus silver trade dollar, — a good one is only worth 90 cents. We with hold the name of the guilty party, and if he will return and redeem the base coin, will forgive him, otherwise he may see his name in print, IMPORTANT TO TOWNSHIPOFFICERS.—The following law, passed by the Legislature in 1879, is important to township officers at this time: SEC. 1. That the term of office of every township officer hereafter elected, whose term of office would under existing laws ex pire on the first Monday of April of any year, shall expire on the first Monday of March next preceding said first Monday of April, and the terms of the successors of such town ship officers shall begin on the first Monday of March, and shall continue for the period now fired for the duration thereof by existing laws. SEC. 2. That the township auditors shall meet o> the second Monday of March of the year one thousand eight hundred and eighty one, and on the second Monday of March in each year thereafter, for the settlement of all accounts by them to be settled, except the accounts of the school directors and school treasurer. SEC. 3. All acts and parts of acts inconsis tent therewith be aud the same are hereby repealed. END OF THE SMITIIFIELD AFFAIR.—The parties engaged in the Smithiield outrage hav ing plead guilty to the charge of riot, were yesterday sentenced by his Honor Judge INGHAM. Three of the men only participated in the riotous proceedings. These were CRUM LAUGH, L. E. IIARKNESH, and M. HEWITT. The first named was sentenced to pay a fine of $lO, costs of prosecution, and undergo an imprisonment of one month in county jail. The other two were sentenced to pay a line of SIOO each, costs of prosecu tion, aud undergo imprisonment in the county jail for two months. The other four, who returned to the house and committed the additional outrage, PIERCE, MATHERS HOLMES and JACKSON, were flued sls, eosts of prosecution, and imprisonment for six months in county jail. Thus the great farce is ended. It looks as though had the idiotic victims of the beastly affair been charged with seducing these in nocent gentlemen, they would hare been convicted. Mrs. BURNETT'S new story begun in Feb ruary Scribner , is alone worth the price of a year's subscription to that excellent maga zine, the very best of all our monthlies. In speaking of the story the Sunday-school Times hits our idea precisely in the following sentences: "It is really a notable work, and it gives a better picture of a simple and true American girl of our under society, as placed in English surroundings, than could he found in the books of forty novelists like HENRY JAMES, JR."
