Personal.
Mrs. Capt. MANVILI.K, who has been visit
ing her mother in Penn Van for the past two
months, returned home yesterday. Both Mrs.
M. and the baby are very well.
We join with other friends in offering con
gratulations to Mr. anil -Mrs. A. S. GORDON.
It's a girl, and put in an appearance yesterday
morning.
The many friends of Mrs. Gen. PATTON,
will be pained to learn that she is again con
fined to her bed with serious illness. We
hope, however, to soon have the pleasure of
announcing her restoration to health.
Miss BERITE BARRON, of Penn Yan, Xew
York, is visiting in this place, where she has
many warm friends.
Miss WOOD, E. M. I)., who has been spend
ing several days in this place, returned to her
home in East Smithtield on Thursday even
ing. She enjoys quite an extensive practice j
as an electric physician.
The elegant piano-forte which Mr. MAN
VILLK furnished for the use of the Musical
Alliance at Wyalusing, has been purchased
by Judge STAFFORD, whose daughter, Miss
ANNA, is acknowledged to he one of the most
accomplished and skillful performers in that
section.
Ex-SherilT CARTRJR, of Wyoming county
was in town yesterday.
JAMES MACFARLANE, Esq., has gone to Al
abama on a business and pleasure trip, lie
is accompanied by his wife They will re
main in the "sunny south"two or three
weeks.
Mrs. KITCHELL, of Bethlehem, was the
guest of Mrs. E. O. MACFARLANE on Huston
street yesterday.
Hon. Jos. POWELL and Lawyer Lou HALL
haye been in Pittsburg attending to business
in the U. S. Court this week.
At the meeting of the conference commit
tees at Harrisburg yesterday morning, Sena
tor DAVIES received five out of the twenty
four votes as u candidate for U. S. Senator. —
The committee could do no wiser thing than
to select the able Senator from Bradford as
their nominee.
E. E. LOOMIS, an old merchant of Troy, is
embarrassed and has suspended.

The subjects of Dr. TAYLOR'S discourses
to-morrow will be, in the morning, " Hope a

Prof. S. F. Ac it LEY will hold a musical
convention at the M. E. Church in Asylum,
commencing Tuesday evening the 22d inst.
and closing with a concert ou Friday evening
the 25th. All are cordially Invited to attend,
The enterprising people of the growing
village of Wyalusing are talking a town hall
very seriously. Having no suitable place
for holding concerts and public meetings,
the churches have to be utilized on such oc
casions—there is now a popular sentiment in
favor of a public hall.
"We hear of much damage resulting to creek
mill dams from the late ice freshet. On near
ly all the large streams in the county more or
less loss has been sustained by mill owners,
the ice being so thick and the water rising to
an almost unprecedented height, a general
sweep followed.
People might as well understand the regu
lations governing the deportment of citizens
011 the bridge, will be strictly enforced, with
out respect to persons, while Mr, ARNOLD,
the present vigilent Argus-eyed watchman is
kept 011 duty. Yesterday SENECA espied a
gentleman crossing the bridge with a lighted

cigar in his mouth, and forthwith inarched
him to the Commissioners' office for imposi
tion of penalty.
There was a large attendance of Past Grands
at the special session of the Grand Lodge I.
O. of O. F. yesterday. Past Grand Sire NICH
OLSON and Grand Chaplain CRAFT were in
attendance. In the evening Mr. N. gave in
struction in the revised work in his usual
clear, entertaining and forcible manner. —
His remarks were attentively listened to by
several hundred members of the Order.
A nock scarf was left at the office of Dr.
PAYNE, a few days ago. The owner can
have it by calling for it.

The President withdrew the nomination
of Foster as United States Attorney for
the Southern district of New York.

so far failed to agree upon a Senatorial

Charles Reed, of Saratoga, says that
Trickett, the Australian sculler, has ac
cepted Reed's ofl'er to back him lor a race
against all comers for SI,OOO, over the
Saratoga course in July or August.
At Pittsburg, excitement was caused
by the collapse of the Rochester Fire In
surance Company, of Rochester, Beaver
county. Investigation reduces the re
ported assets of $140,000 to less than
SIB,OOO.
